Assessing Habitat Suitability and Range Dynamics of Syzygium alternifolium (Wight) Walp Under Future Climatic Scenarios

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
We modeled the current and future habitat suitability of the endangered tree species Syzygium alternifolium using MaxEnt under two climate scenarios (SSP245 and SSP585) for 2050 and 2070. The model showed high accuracy (AUC = 0.93), with significant future range expansion projected outside protected areas, highlighting urgent conservation gaps.

An Analysis of Vegetation and Microbiome Recovery in Abandoned Agricultural Fields

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study investigated the natural recovery of biodiversity in formerly cultivated fields in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, by comparing plant and bacterial communities across different successional ages. We found that diversity levels in old fields began to resemble natural conditions for both community types, indicating a positive recovery ...

On the Brink, a Population of Hedgehogs in Central London

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
A small breeding population of hedgehogs survives in central London's Regent's Park (166 ha). A 10‐year survey (2014–2023) revealed a decline from an average of 28 individuals to just six in spring 2023, driven by low breeding success and high mortality.

Effects of the Irregular Shelterwood System on Regeneration Dynamics of Shorea robusta Gaertn. f. in Baijalpur Community Forest, Nepal

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Irregular Shelterwood System (ISS) in promoting the regeneration of Shorea robusta (Sal) in Nepal's Baijalpur Community Forest. Findings show that treated areas under ISS had significantly higher seedling and sapling densities, improved soil quality, and better regeneration conditions compared to untreated ...
