The Watkins Marine Mammal Sound Database: An online, freely accessible resource

, 2016
One of the founding fathers of marine mammal bioacoustics, William Watkins, carried out pioneering work with William Schevill at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for more than four decades, laying the groundwork for the present day field.

Marine Mammal Resource

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2002
In the sonar world there is still a heavy reliance on the human ear for detection. To detect threats, the sonar operator must be familiar, not only with their acoustic signatures but also with the many and varied noises emanating from other sources in the ocean. These include noises of biological origin, particularly marine mammals.

Marine Mammals and Humans

2020
Ever since I saw my first whale, I have been fascinated by these animals. Technically speaking, it was a small cetacean, a harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), that I saw lying dead on a beach in western Denmark. Where I grew up, in north central Germany, we certainly did not have any whales and therefore seeing one was a quite life-changing ...

Diseases of captive marine mammals

New Zealand Veterinary Journal, 1979
Abstract This paper summarises the diseases observed over a 5-year-period in 29 marine mammals which died in a marine zoological park. Cholangiohepatitis associated with the trematode Campulla palliata was a common finding in dolphins (Delphinus delphis), and septicaemias due to Staphylococcus pyogenes and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae were recorded.

Marine Mammal Neoplasia: A Review

Veterinary Pathology, 2006
A review of the published literature indicates that marine mammal neoplasia includes the types and distributions of tumors seen in domestic species. A routine collection of samples from marine mammal species is hampered, and, hence, the literature is principally composed of reports from early whaling expeditions, captive zoo mammals, and epizootics ...

Lung Mechanics in Marine Mammals [PDF]

open access: possible, 2012
Abstract : The long term goal of this study is to develop methods to study lung physiology in live marine mammals and to use these techniques to investigate the mechanical properties of the respiratory system in different marine mammals. This effort is vital to understand how diving mammals manage inert and metabolic gases during diving and will help ...

Global effort allocation in marine mammal research indicates geographical, taxonomic and extinction risk-related biases

, 2014
Although marine mammals are considered to be disproportionately threatened compared with terrestrial mammals, and research data on marine mammals are limited, few attempts have been undertaken to analyse overall marine mammal research effort. We applied

Migration of Marine Mammals

2004
Marine mammals utilize marine resources throughout the world’s oceans, but the location of food is often spatially and temporally separated from environments that are required for reproduction. There is an increasing understanding of migratory behaviour because of the use of new techniques to track marine mammals.
