A Conceptual Framework and Methods for Studying the Connectivity of Fishes

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 27, Issue 2, Page 342-369, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Connectivity is a multifaceted concept that has important implications for the management and conservation of marine and freshwater fishes. We developed a conceptual framework that encompasses multiple, interrelated categories of connectedness, including landscape (e.g., structural, functional) connectivity and ecological (e.g., trophic ...

Marine Mammals in the Anthropocene: Developing a Systematic Evidence Base of Threats to Nineteen Species

open access: yesMammal Review, Volume 56, Issue 1, March 2026.
Marine mammals are vulnerable to a variety of anthropogenic threats, yet a global systematic map of the literature for 19 species found both spatial and temporal disparity in research effort between threats and between species. There are knowledge gaps for species and threats, with effort unequal across many species' ranges.

Modelling the effect of varying metabolic rate and cardiac output on estimated tissue and blood O2 and CO2 levels in an extreme deep‐diver, the goose‐beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris)

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 3, Page 765-785, 1 March 2026.
Abstract High‐resolution movement data from Cuvier's beaked, or goose‐beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris, hereafter Ziphius, n = 8) tag deployments (4.1–19.2 days) were used to estimate blood and tissue O2 and CO2 levels. Acceleration and magnetometry data were used to estimate the locomotion cost (LC) from the relationship between activity and the O2 ...

Evaluating the Risk of Collision of Seals Swimming Within Metres of Operating Tidal Turbines

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT We used imaging sonar to continuously monitor wildlife at an operational tidal turbine in the Pentland Firth, Scotland, between May 2022 and June 2023. Of 704 detected seal tracks, 347 occurred during turbine operation and 122 of these were detected directly upstream of the rotating blades in the horizontal plane.

Automatic real-time GPS tracking of tagged cetaceans to conduct controlled exposure experimental protocols at sea

open access: yesAnimal Biotelemetry
Background In addition to recording whale behaviour, animal-attached tags enable real-time tracking of a focal experimental subject—required for positioning a sound source to achieve a desired exposure design.

NEPA, National Security, and Ocean Noise: The Past, Present, and Future of Regulating the Impact of Navy Sonar on Marine Mammals

open access: yesJournal of International Wildlife Law & Policy, 2010
Defense and the environment is not an either–or proposition. To choose between them is impossible in this real world of serious defense threats and genuine environmental concerns.

Marine mammal behavior response to sonars, a review

open access: yes, 2013
During the last decades the problems caused by anthropogenic sound and noise in oceans have been recognized in public, by governments, and military. With the use of active sonar, different choices can be made to minimize the risk of damaging or disturbing marine mammals. For this purpose knowledge of sonar disturbance is crucial.
