Genomic Insights into Marine Microalgae

Annual Review of Genetics, 2008
Marine eukaryotic photosynthesis is dominated by a diverse group of unicellular organisms collectively called microalgae. Microalgae include cells derived from a primary endosymbiotic event (similar to land plants) and cells derived from subsequent secondary and/or tertiary endosymbiotic events.

Marine Microalgae

2005
Marine microalgae, the largest primary biomass, have been attracting attention as resources for new metabolites and biotechnologically useful genes. The diversified marine environment harbors a large variety of microalgae. In this paper, the biotechnological aspects and fundamental characteristics of marine microalgae are reviewed.

Peroxidases from marine microalgae

Journal of Applied Phycology, 2000
Peroxidase activity was detected in cell-free extractsof strains of three species of the marine microalgae,Porphyridium purpureum, Phaeodactylumtricornutum and Dunaliella tertiolecta. However, no bromo- or chloroperoxidase activity wasdetected in any, using the standard 2-chlorodimedoneassay. Only the extract from P.

Superoxide production by marine microalgae

Marine Biology, 2005
This study investigated the possible roles of superoxide produced by raphidophyte and prymnesiophyte microalgae as an ichthyotoxic agent to damselfish and an allelopathic agent to bacteria. We found that the rate of superoxide production varied with algal cell density, with cell densities of the raphidophyte Chattonella marina > 10,000 cells ml-1 ...

Biofouling in photobioreactors for marine microalgae

Critical Reviews in Biotechnology, 2017
The economic and/or energetic feasibility of processes based on using microalgae biomass requires an efficient cultivation system. In photobioreactors (PBRs), the adhesion of microalgae to the transparent PBR surfaces leads to biofouling and reduces the solar radiation penetrating the PBR.
