Marine Litter Monitoring on Apulian Beaches in the Decade 2014–2023: Some Evidence of a Decreasing Trend

open access: yesOceans
In recent decades, the issue of marine litter has emerged as a major environmental concern, particularly with regard to plastic litter. The European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC) requires member states to monitor marine litter ...

Heavy metals, metalloids and other hazardous elements in marine plastic litter [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin, 2016
Plastics, foams and ropes collected from beaches in SW England have been analysed for As, Ba, Br, Cd, Cl, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn and Zn by field-portable-x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. High concentrations of Cl in foams that were not PVC-based were attributed to the presence of chlorinated flame retardants. Likewise, high concentrations of Br

Field settlement trap designs for Cassiopea spp. polyp recruitment: A preliminary study

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 24, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract High densities of upside‐down jellyfish (Cassiopea spp.) have been documented in anthropogenically disturbed coastal ecosystems including Jobos Bay, Puerto Rico. However, understanding their field ecology remains limited because most studies are laboratory‐based, focusing on life history and symbiotic relationships.

Estimating a regional budget of marine plastic litter in order to advise on marine management measures

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin, 2020
Using simple models, coupled with parameters extracted from published studies, the annual inputs of macro and micro plastics to the Scottish Atlantic Coast and the Scottish North Sea Coast regions are estimated. Two estimates of land-based sources are used, scaled by catchment area population size.

Evaluation of methods for the analysis of oxygen and carbon dioxide in water, sediment, litter, and soil

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 24, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Choosing an appropriate analyzer to measure concentrations of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) during biogeochemical cycling studies can be difficult, considering the range of options available. While several studies examine the abilities of specific analyzers, comparison of multiple analyzers and environmental sample types is lacking.

Trait‐associated pathway links plant diversity to litterfall phenology in a seasonally dry tropical forest

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2026, Issue 10, October 2026.
Phenology plays a central role in regulating energy flow and nutrient cycling, yet remains insufficiently integrated into biodiversity–ecosystem functioning frameworks. This gap is especially relevant in strongly seasonal systems, where community‐wide synchrony in leaf litterfall may arise from either temporal niche differentiation among species or ...

Resilience‐as‐doing: A relational model for living practice

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 10, Page 3633-3647, October 2026.
Abstract Dominant frameworks treat resilience as a capacity to withstand disturbance and recover, something systems, communities or individuals either have or lack. This paper proposes a different understanding, grounded in relational onto‐epistemology and first‐person, practice‐based, autoethnographic inquiry situated within a household garden.

Comparative Review of Remote Sensing Methods for Ocean Plastic Litter Detection

open access: yesIEEE Access
Marine ecosystems are significantly threatened by plastic litter, hence, effective detection and monitoring techniques are necessary. The identification and classification of ocean plastic litter is made possible by the development of remote sensing (RS)

Impact of harvest intensity on ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungal communities in forest soils

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 10, Page 3146-3160, October 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Low‐intensity tree harvesting has been proposed as a sustainable forest management practice to balance and preserve forest productivity, carbon storage and resilience to climate extremes. Soil fungi play a central role in driving tree performance and soil carbon storage,

Multifactorial diagnosis of drought‐induced decline in Mediterranean conifer forests

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 10, October 2026.
A multi‐proxy approach integrating radial growth, leaf morphology, stable isotopes, elemental composition and soil properties revealed interacting mechanisms underlying drought‐induced dieback in Mediterranean pine populations. Declining trees showed stronger drought impacts on growth, altered stomatal regulation, nutrient imbalances and accelerated ...
