Remote Sensing of Plastic Marine Litter by Means of Fluorescence LIDAR
IGARSS 2023 - 2023 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2023Plastic marine litter is a global environmental challenge which should rely on several remote sensing techniques for detection and monitoring from local to global scale. Here we investigate the use of the fluorescence LIDAR technique to detect and characterise submerged plastics in the marine environment.

Marine plastic litter detection offshore Hawai'i by Sentinel-2
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2021Marine litter patches were detected from Sentinel-2 offshore Hawaii's Big Island (Hawaii) within 10 miles from the coast in the prevalent windward direction (NE), for a total sea surface of 3.0 km2. The patches have a filament-like shape with different orientation, lengths of several kilometers and width from tens to hundreds of meters.

Hyperspectral characterization of marine plastic litters
2018 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for the Sea; Learning to Measure Sea Health Parameters (MetroSea), 2018The problem of marine plastic litters is the object of recent worldwide attention and is the object of current decisions of the European Union that require member states to act in a decisive way to improve monitoring and removal of marine plastic litters in the short term.

Anthropogenic litter is found in marine environments from the beach, beach sediment and surface water to the seafloor. Plastic can persist and accumulate in the marine environment for a long period because of its light weight and degradation-resistant properties.

A critical review on marine litter in the Adriatic Sea: Focus on plastic pollution
Environmental Pollution, 2021Marine litter affects various habitats across the world. This review focuses on the Adriatic region, considering the presence of marine litter as well as microplastics (mPs) and macroplastics (MPs) in different environments (water, beach, seabed and biota).

Marine plastic litter: the unanalyzed nano-fraction
Environmental Science: Nano, 2016In this work, we present for the first time undeniable evidence of nano-plastic occurrence due to solar light degradation of marine micro-plastics under controlled and environmentally representative conditions.

Regulation of marine plastics litter
2023Marine plastics pollution has become a matter of serious concern. There is insufficient research and lack of scientific data regarding its sources, destinations and the consequences befalling on nature and human life. But it is certain that the amount of plastics ending up at sea is alarming and unlikely to disappear anytime soon due to the durability ...

Notice of Retraction: The analysis over marine plastic litter
2010 International Conference on Computer Application and System Modeling (ICCASM 2010), 2010In this paper, we made use of the similarity between the movement of buoy and plastic litter in the ocean and took the motion track of buoy as that of plastic litter. By means of statistical regression, we simulated the motion track of buoy and gained the approximate motion track of plastic litter.

Marine plastic litter – A massive waste problem
2018The pollution of the oceans with anthropogenic and especially plastic litter is acknowledged as one of the major environmental stressors. Life cycle assessments of plastic products carried out to date have failed to take into account the fact that the oceans represent a final sink for plastics.
