Relating Monthly to Yearly Morphological Changes in Embryonic Coastal Dune Systems

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Embryonic coastal dunes are dynamic morphological features shaped by wind, waves, sediment availability, and vegetation. Temporal variability in these drivers controls embryo dune dynamics at short timescales (hours–days), while accreting dune systems often show gradual change over longer timescales (years–decades).

Characterizing Permafrost Distribution Along the Hudson Bay Railway Using Temperature‐Calibrated Electrical Resistivity Tomography

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract As the climate warms, understanding permafrost distribution along linear infrastructure is a key aspect of assessing, mitigating, and adapting to the risks associated with permafrost thaw. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is becoming an increasingly common tool for evaluating permafrost distribution at the infrastructure scale.

Causal Inference Reveals Temperature Dominated the Vegetation Greening on the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau Over the Past Two Decades

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract The Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau (QTP) is a globally vital climate‐sensitive region, where vegetation dynamics serve as key indicators of global climate change and anthropogenic activities. However, conventional methods provide limited causal interpretability, which severely constrains our understanding of vegetation dynamic interactions. Therefore,

Diffusion‐Based Reconstruction of Western North Pacific Surface Winds From CYGNSS for Tropical Cyclone Analysis

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 18, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Sea surface wind retrieval under extreme weather conditions is constrained by the sparse and irregular spatiotemporal sampling of Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS‐R). This study presents a probabilistic wind field reconstruction framework for the Western North Pacific using Score‐Based Data Assimilation (SDA). A diffusion

Probable Maximum Precipitation: The Smethport Challenge

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract The 18 July 1942 Smethport, Pennsylvania storm produced US and world record rainfall accumulations of 165 mm in 10 min, 240 mm in 25 min and 780 mm in 270 min. Observations from the Smethport storm control sub‐daily Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) estimates over a large region of the eastern US.

Site‐specific curtailment thresholds substantially reduce bat mortality at wind energy facilities

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 10, October 2026.
Our findings demonstrate that site‐specific operational thresholds, derived from acoustic data and meteorological conditions, substantially reduce bat mortality at wind energy facilities. As the largest standardized assessment of curtailment effectiveness and the first in Europe, this study supports the widespread adoption of site‐specific curtailment ...
