Tough, Ductile, and Strong Hard‐Soft Cementitious Composite Enabled by Multi‐Material Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Drawing inspiration from the layered hard‐soft architecture found in sea sponges, this work establishes a new framework for architected cementitious composites (ACC) through multi‐material additive manufacturing (MMAM) process. The integration of mortar and elastomer phases into layered architectures enables synergistic toughening mechanisms, including

Marine conservation in the republic of South Africa with special reference to marine parks and reserves

open access: yesKoedoe: African Protected Area Conservation and Science, 1977
Conservation in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) is dominated by big game and terrestrial reserves. Protecting these, have been in existence for many years.

EXOGENOUS SHOCKS AND MARINE RESERVES

open access: yesNatural Resource Modeling, 2011
Abstract The impact on the value of a fishery from exogenous shocks is investigated. Part of the habitat is protected by a marine reserve, while the remaining fishery is managed by optimal, total allowable catch quotas. Shocks of different, spatial nature and with different probability distributions are investigated.

Multifunctional Bio‐Based Packaging for Perishable Foods: Structural Design, Scalable Fabrication, and Versatile Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
An overview of design principles and scalable fabrication strategies for multifunctional bio‐based packaging. Radiative cooling films, modified‐atmosphere films/membranes, active antimicrobial/antioxidant platforms, intelligent optical/electrochemical labels, and superhydrophobic surfaces are co‐engineered from material chemistry to mesoscale structure

Recent Developments in Fisheries Science and Their Prospects for Improving Fisheries Contributions to Food Security [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Marine reserves, areas permanently closed to all fishing, are frequently proposed as a tool for managing fisheries. Fishery benefits claimed for reserves include increases in spawning stock size, animal body size, and reproductive output of exploited ...

Leaftronics: Bio‐Fractal Scaffolds From Leaf Venation for Low‐Waste Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
“Leaftronics” transforms naturally evolved leaf venation into quasi‐fractal scaffolds for sustainable electronics. Polymer‐infiltrated leaf skeletons can be used to fabricate ultra‐smooth, reflow‐ and thin‐film‐compatible decomposable substrates, while making the same lignocellulose networks conducting results in flexible transparent electrodes.

An interdisciplinary evaluation of community-based TURF-reserves.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Coastal marine ecosystems provide livelihoods for small-scale fishers and coastal communities around the world. Small-scale fisheries face great challenges since they are difficult to monitor, enforce, and manage, which may lead to overexploitation ...

Perceptions of ecological risk associated with introduced marine species in marine protected areas [PDF]

open access: yesManagement of Biological Invasions, 2013
The perception of ecological risks (impact and acceptability) associated with introduced marine species (IMS), what demographic variablesinfluence those perceptions, respondent’s knowledge of IMS, and people’s support for controlling introduced marine ...

THE ECONOMICS OF MARINE RESERVES

open access: yesNatural Resource Modeling, 2002
ABSTRACT. Marine reserves can be a useful supplement to other methods of fisheries management, but marine reserves alone are not likely to achieve a great deal in economic terms andperhaps not even in terms of conservation. The effects of marine reserves with open access elsewhere are analyzed, using a logistic model for a population with a patchy ...

Composition Restoration Enables Recycling of Mixed‐Cation, Mixed‐Halide Perovskites for Solar Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Compositional drift during processing prevents the direct recycling of mixed‐cation, mixed‐halide perovskites. This work introduces a framework to quantitatively audit and restore recovered materials, enabling closed‐loop recycling with efficiencies comparable to virgin perovskites.
