Abstract Visual examination, optical and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the cause of failure in the connector groove of a marine riser coupling. The specified steel was AISI 4142 (0.40 to 0.45% C; 0.75 to 1.00% Mn; 0.20 to 0.35% Si; 0.80 to 1.10% Cr; 0.15 to 0.25% Mo) normalized from 9000C.

Evolutionary Design of Marine Riser Systems
23rd International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, Volume 1, Parts A and B, 2004It is said that nature attempts to solve the ‘problem of life’ through evolution. ‘Solutions’ are proposed which are then tested in the world around us. Natural selection ensures that the best characteristics are inherited by subsequent generations. This paper gives details of a new method of automated riser design and optimization using techniques ...

Problems in Marine Riser Design
Marine Technology and SNAME News, 1982Major problems associated with the design of marine risers are identified. Two of these problems, namely, the mathematical modeling of the riser's dynamic behavior and the prediction of the hydrodynamic forces exerted on the riser, are studied. The first problem is studied with the aid of a set of consistent equations describing three-dimensional ...

Natural Frequencies of Marine Drilling Risers
Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1976This paper gives the mathematical basis for determining natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes for marine drilling risers. Numerical results relate natural frequencies to riser parameters; the data cover risers operating within 600 ft of water. An approximate method is given for establishing marine-riser natural frequencies.

Coupled Nonlinear Flexible Marine Riser
2014In Chap. 7, boundary control for a coupled nonlinear flexible marine riser with two actuators in transverse and longitudinal directions is developed to reduce the riser’s vibrations. The dynamic behavior of the flexible riser is represented by a distributed-parameter system (DPS) model with partial differential equations (PDEs), and the control is ...

Large Displacement Analysis of a Marine Riser
Journal of Energy Resources Technology, 1985A method of static analysis for a marine riser experiencing large displacements is presented. The method is suitable for analyzing a riser having a known top tension and a possible slippage at the top slip joint. Utilizing the stationary condition of a functional coupled with an equilibrium equation, one can conveniently obtain the equilibrium ...

Dynamic analysis of a marine riser
2008The problem of the dynamic analysis of a marine riser is considered in this thesis. The equations of motion for a marine riser undergoing large three dimensional deflections and rotations are derived using modal discretization approach. The nonlinear expressions for the bending and torsional deformations are obtained for a beam undergoing finite ...

Development Of A Flexible Marine Riser System
Offshore Technology Conference, 1986Abstract Various uses including energy transportation can be considered for the flexible marine riser system. We had an opportunity of studying on a new marine riser system for electric power transmission cable, participating in the power generating system experiment program of Japan Marine Science
