Modelling and understanding count processes through a Markov-modulated non-homogeneous Poisson process framework

open access: yes, 2021
The Markov-modulated Poisson process is utilised for count modelling in a variety of areas such as queueing, reliability, network and insurance claims analysis.

Deep Learning‐Assisted Coherent Raman Scattering Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
The analytical capabilities of coherent Raman scattering microscopy are augmented through deep learning integration. This synergistic paradigm improves fundamental performance via denoising, deconvolution, and hyperspectral unmixing. Concurrently, it enhances downstream image analysis including subcellular localization, virtual staining, and clinical ...

COVARIANCE STRUCTURE OF INTERRUPTED MARKOV MODULATED POISSON PROCESS

open access: yesJournal of the Operations Research Society of Japan, 1993
Summary: We consider the covariance structure of an interrupted Markov modulated Poisson process. In this process, periods of on-time and off-time alternate; the on-time interval has a phase-type distribution and the off-time interval has a general one. The off-time period represents the time during which no customers arrive.

Edges as ecological filters: Asymmetrical orientation‐specific arthropod activity across forest boundaries

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Moderate retention forestry creates structurally sharp forest edges that act as ecological filters, shaping orientation‐specific activity of ground‐dwelling arthropods. Using drift‐fence pitfall traps, we show that activity aligned with ecotones is more frequent than activity across forest–clearcut boundaries, particularly among detritivores.

Markovian Transition Counting Processes: An Alternative to Markov Modulated Poisson Processes

open access: yes, 2021
Stochastic models for performance analysis, optimization and control of queues hinge on a multitude of alternatives for input point processes. In case of bursty traffic, one very popular model is the \textit{Markov Modulated Poisson Process} (MMPP), however it is not the only option.

Weekend Overload: Day‐to‐Day Fluctuations of Outdoor Recreation Affect Wild Mammals' Space‐Use in a Popular Forest Reserve Near Florence, Italy

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
In an urban‐adjacent forested area, we investigated the spatial and temporal distribution of the wild mammal community in relation to day‐to‐day fluctuations of human presence occurring between working days and weekends. We deployed 52 camera‐traps systematically within an EU Natura 2000 area located within the metropolitan area of Florence, central ...

On a single-server queue with fixed accumulation level, state dependent service, and semi-Markov modulated input flow

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences, 1992
The authors study the queueing process in a single-server queueing system with state dependent service and with the input modulated by a semi-Markov process embedded in the queueing process. It is also assumed that the server capacity is r≥1 and that any

Quantifying Species‐ and Community‐Level Predation by Carabids on Pests and Beneficials in Wheat and Beet Fields

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Using a model that translates qualitative prey detection data (presence/absence in predator gut contents) into quantitative predation rates, we estimate species‐specific diets of nine carabid species across three cropping contexts (wheat, sugar beet, and fodder beet) for five prey types.

Extensions of Markov Modulated Poisson Processes and Their Applications to Deep Earthquakes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
<p>The focus of this thesis is on the Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) and its extensions, aiming to propose appropriate statistical models for the occurrence patterns of main New Zealand deep earthquakes. Such an attempt might be beyond the scope of the MMPP and its extensions, however we hope its main patterns can be characterized by ...

Measure‐valued processes for energy markets

open access: yesMathematical Finance, Volume 35, Issue 2, Page 520-566, April 2025.
Abstract We introduce a framework that allows to employ (non‐negative) measure‐valued processes for energy market modeling, in particular for electricity and gas futures. Interpreting the process' spatial structure as time to maturity, we show how the Heath–Jarrow–Morton approach can be translated to this framework, thus guaranteeing arbitrage free ...
