Journal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.Using 18 years of data on eastern grey kangaroos, we show that drivers of individual reproductive success often do not scale up to population recruitment. Birth asynchrony could buffer population recruitment against environmental variability, such that variables affecting individual reproduction have little impact at the population level.
