Discontinuous strain-induced martensite transformation related to the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect in a medium manganese steel

open access: yes, 2017
The correlation between the strain-induced martensite transformation (SIMT) and the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect during tensile testing of a ferrite-austenite duplex medium manganese (Mn) steel was investigated in this study.

Contribution of austenite-martensite transformation to deformability of advanced high strength steels: From atomistic mechanisms to microstructural response

open access: yesActa Materialia, 2018
Steels combining austenite (fcc) with lath martensite (bcc) in nanolaminate microstructures are tough, resistant to hydrogen-embrittlement, and inexpensive, making them attractive for many technological applications.

Laser Metal Powder Deposition of Titanium Microalloyed HSLA Steel FeC0.12Si0.25Mn1.3

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the additive manufacturing of titanium‐doped high‐strength low‐alloy (HSLA) steel via laser metal deposition. It reveals distinct process‐structure relationships for elemental powder blends compared to prealloyed feedstocks.

Study on Transformation Mechanism and Kinetics of α’ Martensite in TC4 Alloy Isothermal Aging Process

open access: yesCrystals, 2020
The law of microstructure evolution and transformation mechanism of the α′ martensite decomposition during 400−600 °C were studied by the isothermal dilatometry.

A shape memory alloy adaptive tuned vibration absorber: design and implementation

open access: yes, 2005
In this paper a tuned vibration absorber (TVA) is realized using shape memory alloy (SMA) elements. The elastic modulus of SMA changes with temperature and this effect is exploited to develop a continuously tunable device.A TVA with beam elements is ...

Unraveling the Effect of Tramp Elements on Phase Transformations in Steels by Combining CALPHAD Modeling and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates how tramp elements from increased scrap usage influence phase transformations in low‐alloyed steel. Combining dilatometry and microscopy reveal that tramp elements delay transformations, reduce critical cooling rates and increase hardenability.

A micromechanics inspired constitutive model for shape-memory alloys: the one-dimensional case [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This paper presents a constitutive model for shape-memory alloys that builds on ideas generated from recent micromechanical studies of the underlying microstructure. The presentation here is in one dimension.

Microstructure Design of Steel‐Spinel Composites via Spark Plasma Sintering Process

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study illustrates how spark plasma sintering at reduced oxygen partial pressure enables controlled formation of steel‐spinel composites through tailored redox reactions and cation exchange. Comparison of the MgO–Fe2O3, steel–(MgO+Cr2O3), and steel–(MgO+Fe2O3) systems shows how oxygen activity and interface chemistry govern spinel formation, phase ...

Omega transition accompanied by mechanically-induced twinned martensite

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2020
We present here an analysis on omega transition process during martensitic transformation. Martensitic transformation occurred during deformation at room temperature, avoiding the influence of auto-tempering on metastable omega phase.

Effect of the anisotropy of martensitic transformation on ferrite deformation in Dual-Phase steels

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2022
The volume increase and shape change during austenite to martensite transformation in dual-phase (DP) steels are largely accommodated in the microstructure by the deformation of the surrounding ferrite matrix.
