The physics of Martian weather and climate: a review

open access: yesReports on progress in physics. Physical Society, 2015
The planet Mars hosts an atmosphere that is perhaps the closest in terms of its meteorology and climate to that of the Earth. But Mars differs from Earth in its greater distance from the Sun, its smaller size, its lack of liquid oceans and its thinner ...

Samples from Martian craters: Origin of the Martian soil by hydrothermal alteration of impact melt deposits and atmospheric interactions with ejecta during crater formation [PDF]

open access: yes
The origin of the Martian soil is an important question for understanding weathering processes on the Martian surface, and also for understanding the global geochemistry of Mars.

Field‐Aligned Proton Beams Upstream of the Martian Bow Shock: First Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 11, 16 June 2025.
Abstract We report fast sunward‐propagating energetic proton field‐aligned beams (FABs) observed about one Mars radius upstream of the Martian bow shock, recorded by the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer instrument on the MAVEN spacecraft. The velocity distributions show that all the beams have a bulk parallel speed vB=(1.35±0.21)VS ${v}_{B}=(1.35\pm 0.21){V}_{S}

Soil microstructure and electron microscopy [PDF]

open access: yes
As part of the process of comparing Martian soils with terrestial soils, high resolution electron microscopy and associated techniques should be used to examine the finer soil particles, and various techniques of electron and optical microscopy should be

Fluid Dynamics and Infrared Stealth of Marine IRS Devices: A Review

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mechanical System Dynamics, Volume 5, Issue 2, Page 179-200, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Infrared suppression (IRS) devices for naval ships play a crucial role in reducing the infrared radiation signature of high‐temperature exhaust, thereby enhancing the survivability of ships against infrared‐guided weapons. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in the design and optimization of IRS devices.

Recent progress in understanding Mars' unusual annular polar vortices

open access: yesWeather, Volume 80, Issue 6, Page 187-193, June 2025.
A key feature in polar atmospheric dynamics, polar vortices are found on many planets, with those on Mars the most studied beyond Earth. We review current understanding of the physical processes that give the Martian polar vortices their barotropically unstable annular structure, with latent heating from condensation of atmospheric CO2 found to be the ...

Petrologic constraints on the pressure, temperature, time and composition of the Martian interior [PDF]

open access: yes
Petrologic analysis of surface samples has been used to deduce pressure and temperature conditions existing in the crust and upper mantle at specific times in the Earth's history, as well as to estimate the chemical and mineralogical composition of the ...

DepthFormer: Depth‐Enhanced Transformer Network for Semantic Segmentation of the Martian Surface From Rover Images

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 12, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract The Martian surface, with its diverse landforms that reflect the planet's evolution, has attracted increasing scientific interest. While extensive data is needed for interpretation, identifying landform types is crucial. This semantic information reveals underlying features and patterns, offering valuable scientific insights.
