Timing of the Martian dynamo

Nature, 2000
On Mars, the strong magnetization in the highland crust of the southern hemisphere and the absence of magnetic anomalies at the Hellas and Argyre impact basins have been taken as signs that the core dynamo that once drove the planet's magnetic field turned off more than 4 billion years (Gyr) ago. Here, we argue instead that the Martian dynamo turned on

Mini "martians"

Proceedings of the 29th International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques. Electronic Art and Animation Catalog., 2002
The aliens arrive in London. The Mini sees them and leads them on a chase to the countryside, obliterating various landmarks along the way. The pod gets stuck in a cattlegrid and topples, revealing its alien driver. "The challenge for Passion's CG department was twofold," says Cara Speller. "Firstly, we had to match the camera tracking in the animation

The Senses of Martians

The Philosophical Review, 1974
I HAVE a bone to pick with certain inhabitants of outer space who owe their existence to Professor H. P. Grice. The objectionable creatures are Martians and they make their appearance in Grice's article "Some Remarks about the Senses"' where their existence and conversation offer crucial support to Grice's account of the criteria by which we might ...

The Martian magnetotail

Advances in Space Research, 1986
Abstract There is evidence of a strong influence of an atmospheric (cometary) interaction on the Martian tail formation: small total magnetic flux in the tail, the existence of plasma flow of apparently planetary origin, interplanetary magnetic field control of magnetic field orientation in the tail and other evidence.

The Martian twilight

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1981
The changing sky brightness during the Martian twilight as measured by the Viking lander cameras is shown to be consistent with data obtained from sky brightness measurements. An exponential distribution of dust with a scale height of 10 km, equal to the atmospheric scale height, is consistent with the shape of the light curve.

Martian aurora

2006
Aurora have been observed for the first time (in 2004) at Mars by the UV spectrograph SPICAM aboard Mars Express. This result was published in Bertaux et al. (Nature, 435,790,2005). What was observed is a significant increase of the signal for 7 seconds. The spectrum contains some features typical of a dayside spectrum: CO2+ and CO bands and O line. In

No ‘nanofossils’ in martian meteorite

Nature, 1997
Elongated, segmented forms found on fracture surfaces within the martian meteorite ALH84001 have been proposed to be martian ‘nanofossils’1, even though they appear too small to be fossilized bacteria2,3,4. We have examined similar forms and find that the majority are (non-biological) lamellar growth steps on pyroxene and carbonate crystals.
