No way back: decadal lack of functional recovery of a coralligenous community in a warming Mediterranean

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Anthropogenic disturbances are degrading nature at a rate that exceeds its capacity to recover. While considerable research has focused on understanding ecosystem impacts, recovery processes remain comparatively overlooked, particularly in marine ecosystems, where long‐term data on how highly complex systems respond to disturbances are scarce.

Common‐garden experimental evaluation of phylogenetic and functional diversity as drivers of plant performance

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Biodiversity is known to influence the performance of coexisting species and has been proposed as a management tool to enhance the resilience and functioning of plant communities under drought. However, experimental studies to disentangle the roles of phylogenetic and functional diversity as drivers of plant performance remain extremely scarce.

Trait convergence under warming: drought tolerance, not thermal limits, mediates native–invader dynamics in alpine ecosystems

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Climate warming and plant invasions jointly alter alpine ecosystems, but the mechanisms underlying these interactions remain unclear. A key to predicting ecosystem vulnerability is whether native and invasive species can sustain performance as conditions warm.

Intrinsic value and its commitments: a response to the Conguillío Statement

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
The Conguillío Statement asserts that ecosystems possess intrinsic value and presents this claim as part of the normative responsibilities of ecologists. Although such language is common in ecology, it is rarely accompanied by a sustained philosophical defense. This paper clarifies what would be required for the claim to succeed.

Dispersal‐limited birds at high risk from cattle farming deforestation in tropical forests

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Deforestation driven by farming is a major threat to tropical biodiversity. Although this impact is well documented, assessments at local or regional scales often underestimate biodiversity loss at broader national scales by up to 60%. A key question remains: how do farming activities affect functional diversity and species traits across different ...
