Shearing of infill masonry walls under lateral and vertical loading

Journal of Building Engineering, 2021
Abstract The paper presents an experimental investigation on the behavior of two identical large-scale masonry infill walls subjected to different shearing deformations resulting from lateral or vertical loading. The former produces a horizontal displacement field that simulates the behavior of the wall under earthquake excitation.

Studies on Seismic Measures to Improve Masonry Infilled Wall

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014
brittle nature of masonry infilled wall and the wrong connection with the main structure , resulted in the destruction phenomenon in the earthquake . Based on the destruction phenomenon ,this paper analysis the Earthquake damage of masonry infilled wall , according to code for seismic design of buildings (GB50011—2001) and code for seismic design of ...

Modal identification of infill masonry walls with different characteristics

Engineering Structures, 2017
A significant number of structural damages observed in reinforced concrete (RC) structures that occurred in regions affected by earthquakes are due to the presence of the infill masonry walls (IMW). Survey of the structural damages caused by earthquakes reported that the infills panels had an important contribution in the seismic response of the ...

Importance of masonry infill walls for framed buildings

2017 International Conference on ENERGY and ENVIRONMENT (CIEM), 2017
The paper presents a study about the effect of masonry infill walls on the behavior of framed buildings, in seismic areas. The study was done for a building that will be built in Bucharest, Romania. In this case, the building will have 6 stories. The bays are narrow, because of the architecture requirements. The structure is composed of concrete frames.

Geometric characterisation of Portuguese RC buildings with masonry infill walls

European Journal of Environmental and Civil Engineering, 2015
Recent earthquakes showed that the vulnerability of some RC buildings with masonry infill walls is high when subjected to seismic actions. During the design practice, the infills are commonly treated as non-structural elements, despite their recognised contribution to the structural response of the buildings.

A Seismic Retrofit for Masonry Infill Walls using Ductile Concrete

IABSE Congress, Chicago 2008: Creating and Renewing Urban Structures – Tall Buildings, Bridges and Infrastructure, 2008
<p>Understanding and assessing the seismic performance of masonry infilled reinforced concrete structures has been a significant area of research over the last several decades. There is both field and laboratory evidence of masonry infilled reinforced concrete structures not adequately designed for earthquake loading that demonstrated the ...

Developing fragility curves and loss functions for masonry infill walls

Earthquakes and Structures, 2015
The primary objective of this study is to summarize results from previous experimental tests on laboratory specimens of RC/steel frames with masonry infills, in order to develop fragility functions that permit the estimation of damage in typical non-structural components of RC frame buildings, as a function of attained peak interstory drift.

Retrofitting masonry infill walls with novel fibrous structures

2012
The present work reports the development of novel retrofitting materials based on braided fibrous structures for the non-load bearing masonry walls. Three different types of braided structure were produced namely (1) simple braids made of polyester yarns, (2) braids made of polyester yarns and axially reinforced with glass fibres and (3) braids made of

Out-of-plane response of infill masonry walls

2014
The observation of damage after earthquakes has highlighted that out-of-plane failures of masonry infill walls are somewhat frequent. In many cases, the structure withstands the ground shaking with minor damage, whereas infills collapse in-plane or out-of-plane.
