Surface mass balance and energy balance of the 79N Glacier (Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden, NE Greenland) modeled by linking COSIPY and Polar WRF

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2021
To get a better overview of atmosphere-driven mass changes at the 79N Glacier (Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden Glacier), the largest outlet glacier of the northeast Greenland ice stream, the surface mass balance (SMB) is modeled by linking the COupled Snowpack and

Reconstruction of the 1979–2006 Greenland ice sheet surface mass balance using the regional climate model MAR [PDF]

open access: greenThe Cryosphere, 2007
Abstract. Results from a 28-year simulation (1979–2006) over the Greenland ice sheet (GIS) reveal an increase of the solid precipitation (+0.4±2.5 km3 yr−2) and the run-off (+7.9±3.3 km3 yr−2) of surface melt water. The net effect of these competing factors leads to a significant Surface Mass Balance (SMB) loss rate of −7.2±5.1 km3 yr−2.

Pinus cembra L. tree-ring data as a proxy for summer mass-balance variability of the Careser Glacier (Italian Rhaetian Alps)

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2020
Glacial extent and mass balance are sensitive climate proxies providing solid information on past climatic conditions. However, series of annual mass-balance measurements of more than 60 years are scarce.

Temporal downscaling of glaciological mass balance using seasonal observations

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2023
Glaciological mass-balance measurements have been the backbone of internationally coordinated glacier monitoring. The resulting annual observations have been used to understand glacier reactions to climate change, and to assess both regional and global ...

Spatio-temporal reconstruction of winter glacier mass balance in the Alps, Scandinavia, Central Asia and western Canada (1981–2019) using climate reanalyses and machine learning [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2023
Spatio-temporal reconstruction of winter glacier mass balance is important for assessing long-term impacts of climate change. However, high-altitude regions significantly lack reliable observations, which is limiting the calibration of glaciological and ...

High-resolution mass balance reconstructions for Swiss glaciers using machine learning

open access: gold
Glacier retreat poses significant environmental and societal challenges. Understanding the local impacts of climate drivers on glacier evolution is essential, with glacier mass balance being a central concept. This study uses the Mass Balance Machine (MBM; Sjursen et al., 2025), an open-source, data-driven model based on eXtreme Gradient Boosting ...

Aldegondabreen glacier change since 1910 from structure-from-motion photogrammetry of archived terrestrial and aerial photographs: utility of a historic archive to obtain century-scale Svalbard glacier mass losses

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2021
Photogrammetric reconstructions of the Aldegondabreen glacier on Svalbard from 17 archival terrestrial oblique photographs taken in 1910 and 1911 reveal a past volume of 1373.7 ± 78.2 · 106 m3; almost five times greater than its volume in 2016 ...

Reconstructed Centennial Mass Balance Change for Golubin Glacier, Northern Tien Shan

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2022
Mass balance measurements for Golubin glacier in Northern Tien Shan, Kyrgyzstan, have been discontinuous over the last century, with significant data gaps. We provide a unique over 100-year-long mass balance series on daily resolution. We applied a temperature index model calibrated with glaciological measurements and validated with secular mass ...
