A Dual GC–MS and LC–MS/MS Analytical Strategy for Evaluating Free Chlorine Toxicity in Aqueous Samples

open access: yesRapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, Volume 40, Issue 20, 30 October 2026.
ABSTRACT Rationale Chlorine gas is a highly toxic industrial chemical that poses a significant risk in accidental releases and deliberate terrorist attacks. Reliable analytical methods for the determination of chlorine in aqueous samples are therefore required for forensic and environmental investigations.

Counting cases, conserving species: addressing highly pathogenic avian influenza in wildlife

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2190-2213, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has become a critical threat to wildlife, shifting from a seasonal epizootic to a persistent, year‐round panzootic with global consequences. Here, we summarise the origin, evolutionary mechanisms, and expanding host range of the current H5N1 virus (clade 2.3.4.4b) and assess its impact on wildlife. Over

Mathematical Modeling of Pulse‐Seeded Metapopulation Dynamics for Andes Hantavirus Border Dispersal

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 9, September 2026.
A pulse‐seeded metapopulation SEIR model for Andes hantavirus maritime dispersal shows that heterogeneous quarantine compliance determines secondary outbreak risk. The weakest‐compliance country governs global containment, while uniform compliance above ∼65%$$ \sim 65\% $$ reduces the global reproduction number below unity.

Decision‐Making in Public Health Crises: A Qualitative Systematic Review and Meta‐Ethnography

open access: yesPublic Health Challenges, Volume 5, Issue 3, September 2026.
This graphical abstract highlights seven decision‐making models and eight prioritised factors shaping public health crisis decisions. Knowledge and urgency emerged as central drivers, underscoring the need for adaptive, evidence‐informed, ethical and context‐sensitive decision systems.

Indirect tracking of patients in mass casualty incidents

open access: yes, 2010
In MCIs (mass casualty incidents) patient tracking is cumbersome when using paper based approaches. Due to the fact that the spatial positions of the patients are essential in MCIs, we equipped the relief workers with electronic devices.

Emergency Care Needs in an Asymmetric Conflict: A Facility‐Based Cohort Study From Israel on October 7, 2023

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgery, Volume 50, Issue 9, Page 2741-2749, September 2026.
In an armed conflict with loss of territorial control and reduced EMS access, healthcare planners may need to anticipate significant prehospital death and that many patients arrive at hospital informally. ABSTRACT Background Due to the deteriorating global security situation, many countries are preparing their health systems for armed conflict. Wartime

Dam Regulation Moderates Climate‐Induced Rice Yield Loss in the Mekong‐Tonle Sap Lake System

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Rice, a principal global staple crop, is increasingly threatened by flooding under climate change, placing rice‐dependent economies at risk. Yet the capacity of human activities to mitigate inundation impacts on rice remains insufficiently quantified.

The Dichotomies of Crisis: Different Yet Valid Realities of the Lindt Café Siege

open access: yesJournal of Contingencies and Crisis Management, Volume 34, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Over a decade after the Lindt Café Siege saw a lone gunman take hostage 18 people over a 16‐h period resulting in two deaths, the decisions and actions from police and emergency services continue to be scrutinised. When such volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous events occur, they give rise to dichotomies in the perception of (i) crisis; (
