Mass Effects

2021
In the last two decades, community ecology has matured to consider biotic communities as a product of both local and regional processes. Therefore, local communities are currently thought to be connected by the dispersal of organisms, thereby forming a metacommunity. A metacommunity is organized by multiple processes, including environmental filtering,

Composite-fermion effective masses

Physical Review B, 1995
Fractional quantum-Hall-effect features around filling factor ν=½ have been analyzed using the composite-fermion approach. Effective masses deduced from the temperature dependence of the Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) oscillations, in agreement with other measurements, show a divergence as the filling factor approaches ν=½ and scale as (density)¹/².

Mass Effect 3

SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 Computer Animation Festival, 2011
Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines has begun its destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth.

«Target mass» and «effective target mass»

Il Nuovo Cimento, 1965
The concept of « target mass » and « effective target mass » is discussed. Evidence is presented which questions the validity of attempting to relate the « effective target mass » to the concept of a virtual pion surrounding the nucleon. Eelations between the 4-momentum transfer, the quantity (E — P cos θ) of the recoil nucleon and the « effective ...

Mass-Independent Isotope Effects

The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2013
Three fundamental properties of atomic nuclei-mass, spin (and related magnetic moment), and volume-are the source of isotope effects. The mostly deserved and popular, with almost hundred-year history, is the mass-dependent isotope effect. The first mass-independent isotope effect which chemically discriminates isotopes by their nuclear spins and ...

From Effective Mass to Negative Mass

1995
In order to minimize the difficulties students encounter during their familiarization with the concept of effective mass in solid state physics theory, a simple example from another field of physics could be introduced. This is also of interest in a framework of general physics.

Finite Mass Effects

1990
Abstract The mere neglect of a mass effect is quite suspect and often not correct. In the previous chapters, we developed a general formalism for calculating multiple bremsstrahlung in gauge theories at high energies. By considering the limit of vanishing fermion masses, we were able to obtain simple expressions for the various ...

The Mass Effect

2011
March 11, 2011 is a day I will never forget. I had just arrived home to my Tokyo apartment and was searching the house for some documents I needed for an urgent errand. As I leafed through stacks of papers on my desk, I began feeling the all-too-common motion of an earthquake.
