Recent Progress in the Phase‐Controlled Synthesis of Ruthenium Nanocrystals for Catalytic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Template effect and kinetic control enable crystal‐phase engineering of Ru nanocrystals, granting access to either metastable fcc‐Ru or stable hcp‐Ru with distinct surface structures, thermal stabilities, and catalytic behaviors. Moreover, the hcp‐Ru can further serve as an epitaxial template to direct Pd and Rh nanocrystals into the metastable hcp ...

The impact of spikes in handgun acquisitions on firearm-related harms

open access: yesInjury Epidemiology, 2019
Background Research has documented sharp and short-lived increases in firearm acquisitions immediately following high-profile mass shootings and specific elections, increasing exposure to firearms at the community level.

1‐D Collocated Dual‐Gradient Sensory Fibers for Comprehensive Sensing and Decoding of Complex Human Motion and Physiology

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Coupled materials design enables a monolithic fiber that integrates complementary sensing regimes into a single wearable strand. By preserving informative signal features across subtle physiological deformation, large body motion, and mixed mechanical inputs, the dual‐gradient architecture generates synchronized, less redundant outputs that improve ...

The Effects of Cueing and Framing on Youth Attitudes towards Gun Control and Gun Rights

open access: yesSocial Sciences, 2018
I analyze attitudes towards gun control from a recent survey of American high school students. For students who most closely identify as Republicans, cueing them to think about prior school shootings increases their agreement that armed staff in schools ...

Bioinspired Adaptive Surfaces for Intelligent Liquid Manipulation: Progressing From Passive and Active to Hybrid Strategies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review examines passive, active, and hybrid liquid manipulation strategies, highlighting hybrid approaches as an emerging route to reconcile energy efficiency with adaptive control. By actively reconstructing passive surfaces to store programmable interfacial energy, hybrid systems enable flexible yet low‐power liquid transport, with perspectives ...

Origin of Dark Current Robustness in Photomultiplication Organic Photodetectors Enabled by Ionic Conjugated Electron‐Blocking Layers

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Ionic conjugated polyelectrolyte electron‐blocking layers enable photomultiplication organic photodetectors with dark current robustness up to −10 V and external quantum efficiencies exceeding 3000%. Fowler–Nordheim tunneling, interfacial dipole, trap density of states, and noise analyses reveal how ionic conjugated polyelectrolytes suppress electron ...

The impact of the Orlando mass shooting on fear of victimization and gun-purchasing intentions: Not what one might expect.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Mass public shootings are typically followed by a spike in gun sales as well as calls for stricter gun control laws. What remains unclear is whether the spike in gun sales is motivated by increased threat perceptions or by concerns about gun control, or ...

Defect‐Engineered Microwave‐Responsive Ni@C Composites From Waste PET for Catalytic Plastic Upcycling

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A circular upcycling strategy transforms waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottles into microwave‐responsive Ni@C catalyst featuring lattice‐distorted nickel cores and defective carbon shells. These strain‐rich heterointerfaces enhance dielectric loss and promote localized microwave hotspots, accelerating peroxymonosulfate activation and polymer‐chain

Ion Concentration and Voltage Imaging With Fluorescent Nanodiamonds

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We demonstrate reversible switching between the fluorescent NV0 and the dark NV+ state, in sub‐30 nm FNDs via surface oxidation and hydrogenation, respectively. In an electrochemical cell, we show that the fluorescence from hydrogenated particles enables all‐optical imaging of voltages and ion concentrations at the micrometer scale.
