COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR MASS TIMBER STRUCTURES

World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE 2023), 2023
The use of engineered mass timber in large scale structures is increasing due to the demand for low carbon, sustainable building design. The potential for structural timber to combust and contribute to a fire event adds hazards and complexity to the design of mass timber buildings.

Structural Systems for Mass Timber Buildings

IABSE Reports, 2019
<p>This paper investigates the design of lateral force resisting systems (LFRS) for multi-story mass timber structures in Boston, MA. Structural and environmental tradeoffs of replacing conventional concrete cores or steel braced frames with glue-laminated timber (GLT) braced frames are evaluated through numerical analyses of 8-, 12-, and 18 ...

Teaching Timber Across the Curriculum: A Two-Studio Sequence on Mass Timber

112th ACSA Annual Meeting Proceedings, Disruptors on the Edge
Contemporary discourse around mass timber tends to focus on the material’s ecological, formal, or technical significance and not on the unique role the material might play within an academic design studio. As mass timber continues to gain prominence within the built environment and within academic design studios, educators must develop a critical ...

Water Mist Systems in Protection of Mass Timber Buildings

2020
Water mist systems are considered for the protection of timber buildings because they use significantly less amounts of water and consequently less post-water damage. Current water mist system standards and testing protocols do not consider fire scenarios involving exposed timber elements, which pose greater fire load and hazards.
