Ambient vibration testing and modal analysis of multi-storey cross-laminated timber buildings

open access: yes, 2014
The ambient movement of three multi-storey cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings have been measured and used to determine natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios.

Trade‐offs between soil biodiversity and agricultural expansion: Evidence from litter decomposition dynamics in Madagascar

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Home‐Field Advantage (HFA) theory—positing that litter decomposes faster at its site of origin—allows us to disentangle the respective influences of litter quality, soil biota composition, and microclimate on shifts in litter decomposition following land use conversion.

Mass Timber and the Disruption of the Building Sector

open access: yes
Over the past decade, the resurgence of engineered wood products, such as cross-laminated timber for buildings, has inspired a change in the way we build. Driven by an effort of the construction sector to become more sustainable and have lower carbon impacts, cross-laminated timber presented an opportunity to try to build better.

Dynamical properties of a large glulam truss for a tall timber building [Elektronisk resurs]

open access: yes, 2018
When designing a tall timber building, the accelerations due to wind loads are in many cases decisive. The parameters governing the dynamic behaviour of the building are the structure’s stiffness, damping and mass together with the loads.

Apex predators exploit advantageous snow conditions across hunting modes

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Advantageous snow conditions—in terms of snow depth and density—are among the most important features of the winter landscape for two apex predators, regardless of hunting strategy. In a warming climate, the knock‐on effects of a diminishing snowpack may reduce the hunting success of multiple large carnivore species.

The Edification of Manuela Xiqués: Slavery, Finance, Biography, and the Construction of Modern Barcelona

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT An analysis of the dual biographies, economic and domestic, of Manuela Xiqués, an enslaver from nineteenth‐century Cuba and Spain, deepens our understanding of the role of European and Creole women in the nineteenth‐century Atlantic. This essay foregrounds the role of literature, namely family biography, as a locus of the processes of ...
