Masticatory Function with Implant-supported Overdentures
Journal of Dental Research, 2004The type of attachment that is used in implant-supported mandibular overdentures may influence the retention and stability of the prosthesis and, thus, masticatory function. In this within-subject cross-over clinical trial, we examined the hypothesis that greater retention and stability of the overdenture improve the masticatory function.

Functional masticatory evaluation in hemifacial microsomia
The European Journal of Orthodontics, 1995The features of hemifacial microsomia with unilateral condylar hypoplasia in a 9-year-old female patient were analysed in a multidisciplinary fashion. Cephalometric roentgenograms revealed malformation of the mandible, with the right condylar process being smaller than the left.

Masticatory function in children with Down syndrome
Physiology & Behavior, 2021The objective was to study masticatory function of 8 to 10-year-old children with Down syndrome (DS) through the evaluation of maximum occlusal force and masticatory performance (via medium particle size) and compare it to that of children of the same age without DS.A convenience sample of eight, 8-10-year-old children with DS were included in this ...

Craniomandibular disorders and masticatory muscle function
European Journal of Oral Sciences, 1992The heading craniomandibular disorder covers a wide range of abnormal and pathologic conditions accompanied by orofacial pain and impaired mandibular function, the masticatory muscles and the temporomandibular joints being the structures most frequently involved.

Masticatory function in patients with xerostomia
Gerodontology, 1996The effects of reduced salivary output in patients suffering from xerostomia on masticatory function has not been previously studied. This study compares masticatory performance and kinematic activity of patients suffering from xerostomia with age‐, sex‐, and number of occluding pairs‐matched healthy controls.

Impairment of masticatory function in hemiplegia
Neurology, 1988We studied masseter muscle function in 15 hemiplegic patients. Direct motor responses to stimulation of the masseteric nerve were normal. Voluntary activity at maximum strength was reduced on the paretic side. The jaw jerk was symmetric, but facilitation by teeth clenching showed on the nonparetic side only. Masseter silent periods were ill-defined and

Perceived masticatory function among elderly people
Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, 1997summary This Study investigated the status and associations of perceived chewing ability of a group of 891 elderly people, aged 55‐91 years (average age 66 years). The majority of subjects (69%) considered that they could chew well. Only 9% reported poor chewing ability. This judgement was not associated with age.

Normal masticatory function of girls and young women: mandibular masticatory movements
American Journal of Human Biology, 1998Mandibular masticatory movements were evaluated in 10 young adult women and 12 young girls. All subjects had normal occlusion with minimal overjet. Masticatory movements of the incisors were recorded in three dimensions with an Optotrak® camera system while subjects chewed gum in a habitual manner for 20 seconds.

A review of masticatory muscle function
The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 1987Current reports of the actions of the major muscles of mastication are reviewed for clenching tasks in centric occlusion and eccentric jaw positions, mandibular opening, and unilateral chewing. The relationship of the mandible to the maxillae in the intercuspal position and, consequently, the relationship of the condyle to the fossa of the ...
