Iberian mastodonts: Geographic and stratigraphic distribution

Abstract The Iberian Peninsula has a complete Mio-Pliocene fossil record in which all biostratigraphic units are represented. As a consequence, there is an exceptional proboscidean record including deinotheres, mastodonts and elephants, which has increased significantly in recent years.

Distribution of the Mastodonts in Slovenia

In Slovenia, there are some mastodon finds that belong to the extinct representatives of proboscidea. They were discovered in Miocene, Pliocene and Pleistocene sediments in the middle of 19th century. The remains were classified into the bunodont and zygodont development stage.

The catastrophic extinction of North American mammoths and mastodonts

Archaeological and theoretical evidence reviewed here indicates that Clovis-era foragers exterminated mammoths and mastodonts in North America around 11,000 radiocarbon years ago. The process unfolded quickly as human foragers explored and dispersed into fragmenting habitats where megamammal populations were ecologically stressed.

New Mastodont and Mammoth Remains from Pleistocene Deposits in Southeastern Arizona

ABSTRACT The remains of a mastodont and mammoth were recovered from Pleistocene deposits in southeastern Arizona. These new proboscidean remains have characteristics distinguishing them from their more typical late Pleistocene forms. The mastodont (Mammut americanum), has traits similar to those of other female mastodonts, but includes mandibular tusks.
