A Material Understanding of Constitutional Changes

2023
The chapter applies the concept of the material constitution to discuss theories of “constitutional maintenance”, elaborated in continental Europe to explain cases of limited and substantively guided amendments to the text of the constitution, by examining both the case law and the doctrinal debates in selected jurisdictions (including Italy, Germany ...

Constitutive behavior of materials

2009
The solution of elasticity problems requires three types of relationships. First, the equilibrium equations discussed in section 1.1.2, second, the strain-displacement relationships of section 1.4.1. Finally, the stress and strain fields must be related through a set of constitutive laws.

On Constitutive Equations of Quasihomogeneous Materials

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1979
AbstractIn this paper a new conception of derivation of macroscopic constitutive equations of quasihomogeneous materials is presented. The macroscopic equations are derived from the constitutive equations of the material constituents, their volume fractions and a simplified description of the influence of the micro‐geometry of composition.

On constitutive inequalities for simple materials—I

Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1968
Abstract S ome pragmatic postulates of material behaviour, not given by thermodynamics, are reviewed critically. The postulates typically state lower bounds to the work expended on infinitesimal or finite paths of deformation. It is pointed out that such bounds implicitly depend on arbitrary choices of the strain measure.

The material constitution of humanness

Archaeological Dialogues, 2014
AbstractThis contribution responds to recent calls to establish a ‘symmetrical archaeology’ that will assign agency both to humans and to things. My case is that living and non-living things should be distinguished, and for archaeology to be particularly concerned with the ways different qualities ofhumannesshave been constituted in the symbiotic ...

Is Mechanistic Constitution a Version of Material Constitution?

2016
The aim of this chapter is to analyze the similarities and differences between the regularity account of mechanistic constitution and the standard accounts of material constitution. In a first step, the regularity theory of mechanistic constitution is presented, and the problems of material constitution and metaphysical grounding are reconstructed.
