Influence of the amount of permanent-magnet material in fractional-slot permanent-magnet synchronous machines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The efficiency of permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous machines with outer rotor and concentrated windings is investigated as a function of the mass of magnets used, keeping the power, volume, and mechanical air-gap thickness constant. In order to be useful

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Transport Properties of Ni, Co, Fe, Mn Doped Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 for Thermoelectric Device Applications

open access: yes, 2012
Bi2Te3 based thermoelectric devices typically use a nickel layer as a diffusion barrier to block the diffusion of solder or copper atoms from the electrode into the thermoelectric material.

Luminescent solar concentrators. 2: Experimental and theoretical analysis of their possible efficiencies [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
Experimental techniques are developed to determine the applicability of a particular luminescing center for use in a luminescent solar concentrator (LSC). The relevant steady-state characteristics of eighteen common organic laser dyes are given.

Substrate specificity of Burkholderia pseudomallei multidrug transporters is influenced by the hydrophilic patch in the substrate‐binding pocket

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Multidrug transporters BpeB and BpeF from the Gram‐negative pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei have a hydrophilic patch in their substrate‐binding pocket. Drug susceptibility tests and growth curve analyses using an Escherichia coli recombinant expression system revealed that the hydrophilic patches of BpeB and BpeF are involved in the substrate ...

Experimental performance of water cooled building integrated photovoltaic/thermal solar collectors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The idea of integrating water cooled photovoltaic/thermal collectors into building structures (BIPVT collectors) to provide electrical and heat energy is an area that has received only limited attention.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Reuse of Smoulder in Laser Powder-Bed Fusion of AlSi10Mg—Powder Characterization and Sample Analysis

open access: yesPowders
Metal additive manufacturing technologies, such as Laser Powder-Bed Fusion, often rate as sustainable due to their high material efficiency. However, there are several drawbacks that reduce the overall sustainability and offer potential for improvement ...

Microscopic theory of Cooper pair beam splitters based on carbon nanotubes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We analyze microscopically a Cooper pair splitting device in which a central superconducting lead is connected to two weakly coupled normal leads through a carbon nanotube.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).
