Effect of HIV infection on pregnancy-related mortality in sub-Saharan Africa: secondary analyses of pooled community-based data from the network for Analysing Longitudinal Population-based HIV/AIDS data on Africa (ALPHA) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background Model-based estimates of the global proportions of maternal deaths that are in HIV-infected women range from 7% to 21%, and the effects of HIV on the risk of maternal death is highly uncertain.

A Biomimetic cRGDyk‐Engineered Platelet Nanoplatform for ACAD11 Delivery to Trigger Pyroptosis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A biomimetic platelet nanoplatform (OE‐ACAD11@R‐PLT) is developed for targeted hepatocellular carcinoma immunotherapy. By selectively delivering therapeutic plasmids, this system induces mitochondrial dysfunction and triggers robust NLRP3/Caspase‐1/GSDMD‐mediated pyroptosis in tumor cells.

Mitochondrial Quality Control in Degenerative Musculoskeletal Diseases: Signaling Networks and Therapeutic Landscapes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial quality control (MQC) collapse redefines osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc degeneration, and osteoporosis as disorders of organelle dysfunction. Damaged mitochondria leak mtDNA and metabolites, driving cGAS‐STING inflammation, epigenetic reprogramming, and metabolic memory.

Could a simple antenatal package combining micronutritional supplementation with presumptive treatment of infection prevent maternal deaths in sub-Saharan Africa? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
BACKGROUND: Reducing maternal mortality is a key goal of international development. Our objective was to determine the potential impact on maternal mortality across sub-Saharan Africa of a combination of dietary supplementation and presumptive treatment ...

BRCA1 Mutation‐Recognizing Tetrahedral Framework Nucleic Acid Nanoplatform Enables Coordinated PARP/WEE1 Inhibition and STING‐Associated Antitumor Immunity in Ovarian Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
BRCA1 mutation‐responsive FBOA‐tFNA selectively recognizes mutant transcripts and coordinates reduction‐responsive intracellular delivery of olaparib and adavosertib, amplifying DNA damage and weakening G2/M checkpoint protection. These effects are accompanied by STING‐associated immune activation and stronger antitumor immunity, while sequential anti ...

Ischemic Postconditioning Protects Aged Myocardium Against Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury by Regulating Mitochondrial Dynamics via piR‐4913

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A tiny RNA tips the scales of cardiac injury in aging. piR‐4913 recruits OGT to Drp1 and drives its O‐GlcNAcylation at Thr604, promoting excessive mitochondrial fission that aggravates ischemia‐reperfusion injury. Ischemic postconditioning silences this pathway to restore mitochondrial balance and protect the aged myocardium, revealing piR‐4913 as a ...

Interactions between maternal provisioning and natural selection on seed mass fluctuate across heat waves

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Changing climates are leading to more frequent and severe heat waves, potentially threatening plant populations. Both acclimation to stress and selection for heat‐escape or heat‐resistance phenotypes occur during heat waves. However, plastic responses and selection do not necessarily interact cohesively—even producing trait responses ...
