Teleosemantics for neural word embeddings

open access: yesMind &Language, EarlyView.
This paper applies a consumer‐based teleosemantic framework to give a detailed analysis of a particular algorithm for generating word embeddings. In the process, it addresses several of the challenges facing teleosemantic approaches to artificial neural networks.

Effects of Learning Context and Program Length on L2 Skill Development

open access: yesThe Modern Language Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigated the effects of learning context (study abroad versus at home) and program length (summer versus semester) on the development of four language skills among learners of Chinese as a second language (L2). ‘Chrystalline Talk’: Thomas Browne's Poetics of Concretion and Mineral Plain Style

open access: yesRenaissance Studies, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article charts the figuration, both material and rhetorical, of mineral bodies in early modern natural philosophy, paying particular attention to the second book of Thomas Browne's Pseudodoxia Epidemica (1646). It argues that concretions (stony calculi and crystals formed through the aggregation of physical matter) make manifest a mineral

Understanding and truth in Hannah Arendt: The critical reception of the Eichmann trial and the will

open access: yesThe Southern Journal of Philosophy, EarlyView.
Abstract This article highlights a shift in Hannah Arendt's intellectual development regarding the will during the 1960s, traced into the early 1970s when she focused on thinking, willing, and judging. I argue that this change was driven by reactions to her report on Adolf Eichmann's 1961 trial in Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963).

What Does “STEM” Mean to Students? Exploring the Interplay Between Self‐Efficacy, Extracurricular Activities, Subject Associations, and Academic Intentions in Secondary School

open access: yesSchool Science and Mathematics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Despite extensive discourse in educational research and practice, inconsistencies persist in students' perception of, and engagement with, STEM subjects. This study investigates how secondary school students perceive STEM disciplines, and which factors modulate their self‐efficacy and academic intentions. The survey (n = 853) revealed a widely

The Grammatical Structure of Scientific Revolutions

open access: yesTheoria, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this article, I examine the structural parallels between Thomas Kuhn's philosophy of science and Ludwig Wittgenstein's later thought, focusing on the idea of grammatical frameworks. My central claim is that Kuhn's concept of paradigm and its later, more language‐centred forms in his philosophy can be read as a Wittgensteinian grammatical ...
