Solving Practical Problems with Mathematics

1994
Many people who are beginning to use mathematics to help them solve practical problems experience the same difficulties. These difficulties are not so much with the mathematical techniques themselves, which may be quite straightforward when viewed simply as calculations.

SOME PROBLEMS OF MATHEMATICAL CAL

Computers & Education, 1992
This paper describes briefly some problems of mathematical CAL and suggests ways to combat them. Within the context of the CALM Project for Computer Aided Learning in Mathematics we highlight three main areas of difficulty—mathematical display, input and evaluation.

Mathematical formulation of the stefan problem

International Journal of Engineering Science, 1982
Abstract The Stefan problem describes the conduction of heat in a medium involving a solid-liquid phase change at a prescribed melting temperature. Considerations of physical, mathematical and numerical experiences with such problems all imply that enthalpy (not temperature) is the natural dependent variable to specify the solution.

Nonsmooth Problems in Mathematical Diagnostics

2001
Different problems of practical importance, such as problems of pattern recognition, medical and technical diagnostics, identification, study of experimental data etc., can be described by mathematical models which require the solution of the problem of separation of two or more sets.

A mathematical problem of the theory of gelation

Journal of Mathematical Physics, 2002
Current theory of gelation describes this process in terms of a set of nonlinear integral equations. In this article the uniqueness of nontrivial solutions of these equations within the unit functional hypercube has been proved. Besides, the convergence to this solution of iterations from an arbitrary point of the above hypercube has been established ...

On a New Problem of Mathematical Physics

2006
We consider a system of partial differential equations that is not a Kovalevskaya system. The Cauchy problem and the mixed problem in a smooth domain are studied. We prove the existence of a solution in a Hilbert space H and the continuous dependence on the initial conditions. The Cauchy problem in an unbounded space is solved explicitly.

Mathematical Aspects of the Reliability Problem

Journal of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, 1960
approach could be quite useful to the reliability field. The primary purpose of this paper is to report an attempt in this direction. The approach is one that is often useful in such predicaments"/k new concept is introduced which is more general than those employed traditionally and which contains them as special cases.

Cavaillès, Mathematical Problems and Questions

Angelaki, 2018
This paper concerns the role of mathematical problems in the epistemology of Jean Cavailles. Most occurrences of the term “problem” in his texts refer to mathematical problems, in the sense in whic...

Mathematical Explanation: Problems and Prospects

Topoi, 2001
The author deals with the vague concept of mathematical explanation in its relation to mathematical proof and explanation in science. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part is devoted to conceptual clarifications, in the second part different positions concerning explanations in mathematics are presented.
