African American Female Students’ Mathematics Experiences [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
poster abstractGiven the paucity of studies that focus specifically on African American female students in relation to mathematical development, this study is an effort to address the gap in empirical knowledge.

The Thermodynamic Limit of Quantum Coulomb Systems: A New Approach

open access: yes, 2008
We present two recent works on the thermodynamic limit of quantum Coulomb systems, in which we provided a general method allowing to show the existence of the limit for many different models.Comment: Talk given by M.L.

Finite Mathematics as the Most General (Fundamental) Mathematics

open access: yesSymmetry
The purpose of this paper is to explain at the simplest possible level why finite mathematics based on a finite ring of characteristic p is more general (fundamental) than standard mathematics. The belief of most mathematicians and physicists that standard mathematics is the most fundamental arose for historical reasons.

Prospects of Electric Field Control in Perpendicular Magnetic Tunnel Junctions and Emerging 2D Spintronics for Ultralow Energy Memory and Logic Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electric control of magnetic tunnel junctions offers a path to drastically reduce the energy requirements of the device. Electric field control of magnetization can be realized in a multitude of ways. These mechanisms can be integrated into existing spintronic devices to further reduce the operational energy.

Onto-semiotic configurations underlying diagrammatic reasoning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Diagrams and in general the use of visualization and manipulative material, play an important role in mathematics teaching and learning processes. Although several authors warn that mathematics objects should be distinguished from their possible material

Kinetic Insights into Precursor‐Assisted Soft Sphere Close Packing Revealed by In Situ GISAXS with Implications for Gas Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The versatile precursor‐assisted soft sphere close packing during slot‐die coating is investigated with in situ X‐ray scattering. The soft crystallization pathways towards a close packing involve multistep structural transitions such as surface nucleation, in‐plane, and out‐of‐plane crystallization.

Contractions of Lie algebras and algebraic groups [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Degenerations, contractions and deformations of various algebraic structures play an important role in mathematics and physics. There are many different definitions and special cases of these notions.

Reconfigurable Three‐Dimensional Superconducting Nanoarchitectures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
3D superconducting nanostructures offer new possibilities for emergent physical phenomena. However, fabricating complex geometries remains challenging. Here 3D nanoprinting of complex 3D superconducting nanoarchitectures is established. As well as propagating superconducting vortices in 3D, anisotropic superconducting properties with geometric ...

Mathematics teachers’ professional knowledge [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
This paper addresses the study of teachers’ knowledge, beliefs, conceptions and practices, presenting some illustrations from the area of problem solving. In mathematics education, the teacher has attracted much less work than the student.

Composition and Resulting Band Alignment at the TiO2/InP Heterointerface: A Fundamental Study Combining Photoemission Spectroscopy and Theory

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The chemical composition and band alignment are systematically investigated at the TiO2/InP heterointerface. Thin TiO2 films are deposited by ALD on atomically ordered, P‐terminated p‐InP(100). By combining UPS, XPS, and ab initio molecular dynamics, the atomistic structure and electronic alignment are revealed.
