Activation of mating type genes by transposition in Saccharomyces cerevisiae [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae may express an a or alpha mating type. These cells types may be interconverted as a consequence of heritable genetic alteractions at the mating type locus (MAT).

A genetic linkage map of Venturia inaequalis, the causal agent of apple scab [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background Venturia inaequalis is an economically-important disease of apple causing annual epidemics of scab worldwide. The pathogen is a heterothallic ascomycete with an annual cycle of sexual reproduction on infected apple leaf litter, followed by ...

Development and Application of a Cleaved Amplified Polymorphic Sequence Marker for Discriminating A Mating Type Alleles of Lentinula edodes

open access: yes한국균학회지, 2020
Lentinula edodes is one of the most widely consumed edible mushrooms in Korea. Mating in L. edodes is regulated by a tetrapolar system, and two unlinked genetic loci, A and B, are known to be major determinants of the mating types, as reported in other ...

Deletions and single base pair changes in the yeast mating type locus that prevent homothallic mating type conversions. [PDF]

open access: greenProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1983
Several cis-acting mutations that prevent homothallic mating type conversions in Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been examined. Deletions within the mating type (MAT) locus were obtained by selecting for survivors among homothallic MAT alpha cells carrying the rad52 mutation. The survivors were unable to switch mating type, even in RAD+ derivatives.

Allelic segregation and independent assortment in T. brucei crosses: proof that the genetic system is Mendelian and involves meiosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The genetic system on Trypanosoma brucei has been analysed by generating large numbers of independent progeny clones from two crosses, one between two cloned isolates of Trypanosoma brucei brucei and one between cloned isolates of T. b.

Discovery of a modified tetrapolar sexual cycle in Cryptococcus amylolentus and the evolution of MAT in the Cryptococcus species complex. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2012
Sexual reproduction in fungi is governed by a specialized genomic region called the mating-type locus (MAT). The human fungal pathogenic and basidiomycetous yeast Cryptococcus neoformans has evolved a bipolar mating system (a, α) in which the MAT locus ...

Evolution of sexes from an ancestral mating-type specification pathway.

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2014
Male and female sexes have evolved repeatedly in eukaryotes but the origins of dimorphic sexes and their relationship to mating types in unicellular species are not understood.

Cryptococcus neoformanspopulation includes hybrid strains homozygous at mating-type locus [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Yeast Research, 2006
Recent attempts to characterise the hybrid strains of Cryptococcus neoformans have led to the identification of a cryptic population of hybrid strains ('H strains') with double DNA content but only a single mating-type allele. To verify a set of hypotheses concerning their origin, we investigated 14 previously isolated H strains and ten F1-progeny ...

Genetic and Molecular Evidence of a Tetrapolar Mating System in the Edible Mushroom Grifola frondosa

open access: yesJournal of Fungi, 2023
Grifola frondosa is a valuable edible fungus with high nutritional and medicinal values. The mating systems of fungi not only offer practical strategies for breeding, but also have far-reaching effects on genetic variability.

Virulence attributes and hyphal growth of C. neoformans are quantitative traits and the MATalpha allele enhances filamentation. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2006
Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungal human pathogen with a bipolar mating system. It undergoes a dimorphic transition from a unicellular yeast to hyphal filamentous growth during mating and monokaryotic fruiting. The traditional sexual cycle that leads to
