Effect of competitive cues on reproductive morphology and behavioral plasticity in male fruitflies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Phenotypic plasticity will be favored whenever there are significant fitness benefits of responding to environmental variation. The extent and nature of the plasticity that evolves depends on the rate of environmental fluctuations and the capacity to ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

The MAP Kinase SsKpp2 Is Required for Mating/Filamentation in Sporisorium scitamineum

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
In the phytopathogenic fungus Sporisorium scitamineum, sexual mating between two compatible haploid cells and the subsequent formation of dikaryotic hyphae is essential for infection. This process was shown to be commonly regulated by a mitogen-activated

The costs and benefits of multiple mating in a mostly monandrous wasp [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Funding: NERC DTGThe taxonomically widespread nature of polyandry remains a puzzle. Much of the empirical work regarding the costs and benefits of multiple mating to females has, for obvious reasons, relied on species that are already highly polyandrous.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Pollination of Anthurium (Araceae) by derelomine flower weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

open access: yesRevista de Biología Tropical, 2007
Cyclanthura flower weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Derelomini) are identified for the first time as pollinators of multiple species of Anthurium (Araceae) in Costa Rica.

Life history and mating systems select for male biased parasitism mediated through natural selection and ecological feedbacks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Males are often the "sicker" sex with male biased parasitism found in a taxonomically diverse range of species. There is considerable interest in the processes that could underlie the evolution of sex-biased parasitism.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

The ‘obligate diploid’ Candida albicans forms mating-competent haploids

open access: yesNature, 2013
Candida albicans, the most prevalent human fungal pathogen, is considered to be an obligate diploid that carries recessive lethal mutations throughout the genome. Here we demonstrate that C.

The Effects of Insecticide Treated Netting on Male-Female Interactions in Red Flour Beetles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Courtship behaviors take place before and after copulation for the purpose of stimulating the female (Evardsson & Arnqvist 2000). Females will mate with different males within minutes of the first copulation (Pai &Yan 2003), with males showing a ...
