Matrices can be seen as linear transformations on suitable subspaces of the n dimensional vector space. A thorough study of this notion starts with span, basis, and dimension of a subspace. Linear transformations lead to the concept of coordinate vectors and coordinate matrices.

Bounded-Norm Matrix-Inverse Mappings
IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis, 1990This paper introduces the concept of bounded-norm matrix-inverse mappings, i.e. mappings μ: R m×n →R nxm such that, for all nonzero m×n matrices A, the matrix μ(A) is a generalized inverse of A and ||μ(A)|| 0 is a constant and s(A) in the nonzero singular value of A having smallest absolute value.

Automated deformation mapping in metal matrix composites
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1996Abstract A new technique, automated deformation mapping (ADM), has been developed and used to map the mechanical response of the fiber and matrix in a single-fiber SiC SCS-6/Ti-6Al-4V composite. The technique employs a novel combination of fiducial gridding and computer-aided image analysis using cross-correlation for feature location.

Subinvariants for Analytic Mappings on Matrix Balls
Analysis, 1981The Poincaré metric on the unit disk is invariant under conformal maps of the disk onto itself and contracted by any analytic map of the disk into itself. On a domain G in several complex dimensions there are many invariant metrics and some of these are contracted and some are not.
