Literature review on antimony concentrations in foodstuffs and consumer risk assessment

open access: yesFood Risk Assess Europe, Volume 3, Issue 4, October 2025.
Abstract This study aimed to produce a comprehensive review of published data and Swiss enforcement laboratory analyses on antimony (Sb) concentrations in foodstuffs, including their sources, speciation, and potential health risks to consumers. Sb concentration data were compiled through an extensive survey of both scientific and grey literature.

Rapidly increasing chance of record UK summer temperatures

open access: yesWeather, Volume 80, Issue 8, Page 268-276, August 2025.
The UK recorded its first exceedance of 40°C in July 2022. To assess the current chance of recurrence, we use a large climate model ensemble approach and find the 2023 return period to be 1‐in‐24 years (1/20–1/29 years confidence interval). However, the likelihood of 40°C has been accelerating and we estimate a 50–50 chance of another exceedance in the

Interpreting Ice Anisotropy of Greenland's Fastest Outlet Glacier Using Basal Icequakes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 12, 28 June 2025.
Abstract Ice anisotropy can have significant impact on ice rheology and flow dynamics. However, a lack of in situ measurements limits the validation and incorporation of anisotropy, so most ice flow models assume isotropic ice. Especially observations of anisotropy in fast‐flowing ice streams are scarce.

Viewing Stomata in Action: Autonomous in Planta Imaging of Individual Stomatal Movement

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, Volume 48, Issue 6, Page 4533-4549, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Stomata regulate plant gas exchange under changing environments, but observations of single stomata dynamics in planta are sparse. We developed a compact microscope system that can measure the kinetics of tens of stomata in planta simultaneously, with sub‐minute time resolution.

Fluid dynamics of aortic root dilation in Marfan syndrome

open access: yes, 2014
Aortic root dilation and propensity to dissection are typical manifestations of the Marfan Syndrome (MS), a genetic defect leading to the degeneration of the elastic fibres. Dilation affects the structure of the flow and, in turn, altered flow may play a

Chinese Development Finance and African Policy Space: Towards Productive Incoherence?

open access: yesJournal of International Development, Volume 37, Issue 4, Page 1039-1053, May 2025.
ABSTRACT How does Chinese Development Finance influence perceptions of policy space across Sub‐Saharan Africa? This paper employs Grabel's concept of ‘productive incoherence’ to both describe the ‘new development finance landscape’ and to explore its implications for recipient‐country policy space.

Production of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde using a two-step process with Lactobacillus reuteri [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
3-Hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA) produced by Lactobacillus reuteri is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial substance of glycerol conversion. The aim of the present work was to optimize 3-HPA production by Lb. reuteri ATCC 53608 using a two-step process.

Astronomically paced changes in overturning circulation in the Western North Atlantic during the middle Eocene [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) currently redistributes heat and salt between Earth’s ocean basins, and plays a vital role in the ocean-atmosphere CO2 exchange.

Improved Real‐Time Hail Damage Estimates Leveraging Dense Crowdsourced Observations

open access: yesMeteorological Applications, Volume 32, Issue 3, May/June 2025.
This study leverages dense crowdsourced hail reports over Switzerland to improve real‐time building damage predictions. By applying a rigorous filtering approach and a custom interpolation method, a gridded hail size product is derived for each event and used as input to a hail damage model.
