Labial and maxillary palp recordings of the Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis, reveal olfactory and hygroreceptive capabilities

Journal of Insect Physiology, 2019
Electrophysiological recordings from the labial and maxillary palps of the Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis, revealed their ability to detect several volatile chemicals, including water vapor and acetic acid. The results indicate that these appendages may play a large role in this beetle's assessment of its immediate environment.

Sensilla of the antennae and the labial and maxillary palps of Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae): Their classification and distribution

Journal of Morphology, 1981
AbstractThe various sensilla on the antennae and on the labial and maxillary palps of Blattella germanica (L.) were studied. Thick‐walled chemoreceptors with fluted shafts and articulated bases are located on the antennae and on the labial and maxillary palps. Thin‐walled chemoreceptors, without fluted shafts or articulated bases, are restricted to the

Morphology and distribution of antennal, maxillary palp and labial palp sensilla of the adult bruchid beetles,Callosobruchus chinensis(L.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae)

Entomological Research, 2018
AbstractCallosobruchus chinensis(Coleoptera: Bruchidae) is the main pest of mungbean (Vigna radiata) especially during seed storage. To provide background information for chemical ecology studies, we examined the externalmorphology of the antennal, maxillary palp and labial palp sensilla of this insect with scanning electron microscopy. The antennae of

Comparative morphology of sensilla on the antennae, maxillary and labial palps in different larval instars of Cryptorrhynchus lapathi (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Zoologischer Anzeiger, 2019
Abstract Cryptorrhynchus lapathi (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is an important cosmopolitan wood-boring insect pest. Its larval stages damage salicaceous plants and thereby cause serious economic losses to the forest industry. In this study, we used scanning electron microscopy to record the number, typology, morphology, and distribution of ...

Morphology of antennal, maxillary palp and labial palp sensilla in different larval instars of the Asian long‐horned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)

Acta Zoologica, 2015
AbstractThe Asian long‐horned beetle (ALB) is one of the most important international trunk‐boring insect pests of forest trees, which has caused enormous losses in the forests of China, the USA and some countries in Europe. To investigate the morphology of the antennal, maxillary palp and labial palp sensilla in the five larval instars of the ALB ...

Comparative morphology of sensilla on antenna, maxillary palp and labial palp of larvae of Eucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus (Olivier) and E. brandti (Harold) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Acta Zoologica, 2017
AbstractEucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus (Olivier) and E. brandti (Harold) are two wood boring pests of Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle (tree of heaven) and the variety Ailanthus altissima var. Qiantouchun. These beetles attack healthy trees and bore into roots and trunks during the larval stage.

SNMP1 and odorant receptors are co-expressed in olfactory neurons of the labial and maxillary palps from the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria (Orthoptera: Acrididae)

Cell and Tissue Research, 2019
In insects, pheromones are detected by olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) of the antennae that co-express pheromone receptors (PRs) and the "sensory neuron membrane protein 1" (SNMP1). Beyond its relevance for pheromone detection via the antenna, little is known about a potential expression and functional role of SNMP1 in cells of other chemosensory ...

THE ROLE OF THE MAXILLARY AND LABIAL PALPS IN THE FEEDING BEHAVIOUR OF SCHISTOCERCA GREGARIA

Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 1979
The role of the maxillary and labial palps in the initiation and maintenance of feeding has been analysed in female fifth‐instar nymphs of Schistocerca gregaria. The ability to perceive single chemicals prior to feeding and to feed to repletion on them is markedly reduced in the absence of the palps.

Comparative morphology of sensilla on antenna, maxillary palp and labial palp of larvae of white‐spotted and yellow‐spotted Asian long‐horned beetle,Anoplophora glabripennisMotschulsky (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)

Entomological Research, 2016
AbstractThe Asian long‐horned beetle (ALB) is one of the most important wood‐boring insects worldwide that damages broad‐leaved trees, primarily poplar, willow, elm and maple. Based on the color of the spots on the elytra, the beetles are separated into white‐spotted (ALB‐W) and yellow‐spotted (ALB‐Y) Asian long‐horned beetles.

Sensory Organs inIps typographus(Insecta: Coleoptera) Fine structure of the sensilla of the maxillary and labial palps

Acta Zoologica, 1982
The labial and maxillary palps of the bark beetle, Ips typographus, possess a diversified array of sensilla. There are four types of sensilla possessing a single tubular body indicating a mechanoreceptive function. The variation of the associated cuticular structures of these sensillar types ranges from long bristles to cavities within the cuticle ...
