Bacteria in Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis

Sixty-one chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses produced 131 bacterial strains from mucosal pieces that were taken during a Caldwell-Luc operation and cultured aerobically and anaerobically. Sinus secretions showed only 62 and nasal secretions 106 bacterial strains. Fourteen mucosal strains, including 11 Haemophilus influenzae, grew heavily.

Acute Maxillary Sinusitis in Children

We sought to correlate the clinical, radiographic, and bacteriologic findings in maxillary sinusitis in 30 children who had both upper-respiratory-tract symptoms and abnormal maxillary radiographs. Cough, nasal discharge, and fetid breath were the most common signs, but fever was present inconsistently.

Because of the apparent rarity of this case in which both maxillary antrums were invaded by neoplasm, a careful scrutiny of the literature was undertaken in order to determine whether any such case had been previously reported. During the past twenty years there has been no report of a case of bilateral neoplastic involvement of the antrums.

Seven skeletal samples were examined from North America, England, and Nubia, and selected to represent different geographic locations, environments, and subsistence economies. Frequency rates varied from 17.2 to 51.5% of individuals affected with one or both sinuses preserved.
