Vog: Using Volcanic Eruptions to Estimate the Health Costs of Particulates
The negative consequences of long‐term exposure to particulate pollution are well established but a number of studies find no effect of short‐term exposure on health outcomes. The high correlation of industrial pollutants complicates the estimation of the impact of individual pollutants on health.

A method for digitized flow-volume curves and expiratory resistance measurements using standard ventilatory equipment [PDF]
Pulmonary resistance may be assessed in ventilated patients by analysis of passive expiratory pressure and flow properties of the respiratory system. Such measurements are generally complex and require specialized equipment.

Maximal oxygen uptake validation in children with expiratory flow limitation [PDF]
A two-test protocol (incremental/ramp (IWT) + supramaximal constant-load (CWR)) to affirm max and obviate reliance on secondary criteria has only been validated in highly fit children. In girls (n = 15) and boys (n = 12) with a wide range of VO[subscript

A Test of the Coase Conjecture Using Prices of Electronic Books
ABSTRACT The Coase Conjecture predicts that a durable‐goods monopolist without commitment will rapidly cut price toward marginal cost. We test this prediction in the electronic‐book market using release‐day prices. To proxy for marginal cost, we use competitive prices of public‐domain electronic books on the same platforms.

ABSTRACT We investigate the competitive effects of a merger in the cough and cold medicines segment between GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Pfizer. The parties offered efficiency gains, and authorities concluded the merger would not lessen competition. Using product‐level data from the Philippines, we estimate a structural demand model to assess efficiency ...

ABSTRACT Sargassum inundation of Caribbean and American shorelines is a growing environmental hazard. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3) produced by decomposing Sargassum could be involved in airway obstruction and bronchial inflammation. The study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of exposure to H2S and NH3 gases emitted during Sargassum ...
