On maximal subgroups of Thompson’s group $F$
We study subgroups of Thompson's group $F$ by means of an automaton associated with them. We prove that every maximal subgroup of $F$ of infinite index is closed, that is, it coincides with the subgroup of $F$ accepted by the automaton associated with it.

The maximal subgroups of the Monster
The classification of the maximal subgroups of the Monster $\mathbf{M}$ is a long-standing problem in finite group theory. According to the literature, the classification is complete apart from the question of whether $\mathbf{M}$ contains maximal subgroups that are almost simple with socle $\mathrm{PSL}_2(13)$.

On 2-maximal subgroups of finite groups
Communications in Algebra, 2021We distinguish 2-maximal and strictly 2-maximal subgroups of a finite group and give examples of soluble and simple groups in which every 2-maximal subgroup is strictly 2-maximal. Let M be a maximal subgroup of a group G.

The influence of second maximal subgroups on the generalized p-solvability of finite groups
Communications in Algebra, 2021We investigate the influence of some second maximal subgroups on the structure of finite groups. In details, the p-solvability and generalized p-solvability of finite groups are determined by considering the cover-avoidance property of the sets of some ...

This paper is a successor of the second author's paper [ibid. 95, 197-222 (1984; Zbl 0551.20010)]. Here all maximal subgroups of the sporadic Fischer simple group Fi(22) and its automorphism group are determined. Working with a 77-dimensional representation over GF(2) for some computations a computer was used.

Weakly maximal subgroups of branch groups
International journal of algebra and computation, 2019Let $G$ be a branch group acting by automorphisms on a rooted tree $T$. Stabilizers of infinite rays in $T$ are examples of weakly maximal subgroups of $G$ (subgroups that are maximal among subgroups of infinite index), but in general they are not the ...
