Expectation-maximization estimators for incompletely observed data [PDF]

open access: yesEkonomski Anali, 2004
Expectation-maximization is a broadly applicable approach to the iterative computation of maximum likelihood estimates. Each iteration of expectation-maximization method consists of two steps: the expectation step and the maximization step.

Resilient Monotone Submodular Function Maximization

open access: yes, 2017
In this paper, we focus on applications in machine learning, optimization, and control that call for the resilient selection of a few elements, e.g. features, sensors, or leaders, against a number of adversarial denial-of-service attacks or failures.

Screening for lung cancer: A systematic review of overdiagnosis and its implications

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Low‐dose computed tomography (CT) screening for lung cancer may increase overdiagnosis compared to no screening, though the risk is likely low versus chest X‐ray. Our review of 8 trials (84 660 participants) shows added costs. Further research with strict adherence to modern nodule management strategies may help determine the extent to which ...

Developing evidence‐based, cost‐effective P4 cancer medicine for driving innovation in prevention, therapeutics, patient care and reducing healthcare inequalities

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cancer problem is increasing globally with projections up to the year 2050 showing unfavourable outcomes in terms of incidence and cancer‐related deaths. The main challenges are prevention, improved therapeutics resulting in increased cure rates and enhanced health‐related quality of life.

Crucial parameters for precise copy number variation detection in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded solid cancer samples

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that copy number variations (CNVs) can be reliably detected in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded (FFPE) solid cancer samples using ultra‐low‐pass whole‐genome sequencing, provided that key (pre)‐analytical parameters are optimized.

cMaxDriver: A Centrality Maximization Intersection Approach for Prediction of Cancer-Causing Genes in the Transcriptional Regulatory Network

open access: yesInternational Journal of Information and Communication Technology Research, 2022
Cancer-causing genes are genes in which mutations cause the onset and spread of cancer. These genes are called driver genes or cancer-causal genes. Several computational methods have been proposed so far to find them.

Deliberately making miskates: Behavioural consistency under win maximization and loss maximization conditions

open access: yesnpj Science of Learning, 2023
We argue that the feedback traditionally used to indicate negative outcomes causes future detrimental performance because of the default goal of win maximization.

Welfare Maximization Entices Participation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We consider randomized mechanisms with optional participation. Preferences over lotteries are modeled using skew-symmetric bilinear (SSB) utility functions, a generalization of classic von Neumann-Morgenstern utility functions. We show that every welfare-
