Maxwell's role in turning the concept of model into the methodology of modeling

Studies in History and Philosophy of Science, 2021
This is a contribution towards a history and philosophy of modeling in its early stages in electromagnetism. In 1873, James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) hinted at the methodology of modeling at the end of his Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism. We focus on Maxwell's impact on physicists who immediately followed him, specifically Oliver Lodge (1851-1940)

2D Maxwell model

Journal of Macromolecular Science, Part B, 2002
A polymer is considered to be an ensemble of elastic elements with friction between them. Newton's law relating shear stress and strain is assumed to be valid even at high shear rate flow of the polymer, but the viscosity is assumed to be dependent on variables other than the shear rate.

On stretching maxwell models

Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, 1977
Abstract The transient response of selected Maxwell models to various modes of spatially homogeneous uniaxial elongation is studied qualitatively. New results include the effect of non-linearity on the creep curve (constant stress elongation), which leads to a delay in attaining steady flow, and the difference in recoverable strain estimates obtained

Signal model based on Maxwell's equations

2014 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2014
High resolution imaging is an important trend for SAR. The wide bandwidth signal is a must for high resolution. The error of traditional model based on the narrow bandwidth system may be inevitable for high resolution imaging. In this paper, a general SAR echo model is derived for the wide bandwidth system, and we also get the error factor between the ...

Maxwell's equations in Segal's model: Solutions and their invariance

Letters in Mathematical Physics, 1980
We determine all smooth solutions of Maxwell's equation in Segal's universe; furthermore we show that the group of diffeomorphisms stabilizing the space of solutions of these equations is the conformal group of Segal's model.

DSMC Implementation of the Schamberg Model: Comparison with the Maxwell Model

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005
In order to provide a further tool for the evaluation of the molecule‐surface interaction and therefore of the aerodynamic forces from a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) code, a DSMC implementation of the Schamberg model is proposed. This model has been considered of interest; it seems to be more realistic, from a phenomenological point of view ...

Modelling electrodialysis using the Maxwell-Stefan description

The Chemical Engineering Journal and the Biochemical Engineering Journal, 1995
The Maxwell-Stefan mass transfer description is applied to two electrodialysis systems. Firstly, a model system involving NaCl and HCl is investigated. For this system, all the model parameters are obtained either from separate experiments or existing correlations. Although it is not possible to determine all the parameters accurately, the values found

Hyperbolicity of the Nonlinear Models of Maxwell?s Equations

Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2004
The class of nonlinear models of electromagnetism is considered [see \textit{B. D. Coleman} and \textit{E. H. Dill}, Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 22, 691--702 (1971; Zbl 0218.35072)]. To describe the electromagnetic field \((B,D)\) its energy density \(W(B,D)\) is used. The models are constructed on basis of conservation laws.

Impurities in inelastic Maxwell models

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005
Transport properties of impurities immersed in a granular gas undergoing homogenous cooling state are studied. The results are obtained from the Boltzmann‐Lorentz kinetic equation for inelastic Maxwell models in d dimensions. The kinetic equation is solved by means of the Chapman‐Enskog method up to first order in the density gradient of impurities ...
