The extraction parameters and speciation of 137Cs and 241Am in bottom sediments of reservoir R-17 of the Mayak Production Assocation were studied. The extraction was performed with four solutions with different pH values (water simulating in its composition the groundwater from the investigated area, 0.1 M Na2CO3, acetate buffer solution, and 1 × 10−3 ...

The experience accumulated while dealing with the aftermath of a major nuclear accident (the 'Kyshtym Accident') in 1957 at the Mayak complex in the Southern Urals of Russia is summarised. Information is presented on the causes of the accident, on the radiation environment and radioactive contamination of the affected territory in the critical period ...

A registry for chronic radiation syndrome (CRS), a deterministic effect of chronic exposure to external and/or internal radiation at doses and dose rates exceeding thresholds for tissue reactions, was established within a medical and dosimetry database known as 'Clinics', of the Southern Urals Biophysics Institute at the Federal Medical and Biological ...

The systemic distribution of plutonium was determined for "healthy" workers who chronically inhaled plutonium at the radiochemical plants of the Mayak Production Association. The data were obtained by radiochemical analysis of soft tissues and bones samples collected upon autopsy of 120 workers who died from acute coronary diseases and accidents.

Because of its importance to reconstructing radiation doses for ongoing epidemiological studies, a feasibility study was undertaken to determine if the source term of radioactive materials released to the Techa River from the Mayak Production Association, the first facility in the former Soviet Union for the production of plutonium, could be ...

Americium-241 (²⁴¹Am) is the second most significant radiation hazard after ²³⁹Pu at some of the Mayak Production Association facilities. This study summarizes current data on the accumulation, distribution, and excretion of americium compared with plutonium in different organs from former Mayak PA workers.

Comparisons between results of in vivo counting measurements of americium burden and results from radiochemical analyses of organ samples taken at autopsy of 11 cases of former Mayak workers were made. The in vivo counting measurements were performed 3-8 y before death.
