The insect order Ephemeroptera, or mayflies as they are usually called, have attracted man's attention for centuries. As early as 1 675, Swammerdam wrote Ephemeri vita (212), which contains an amazingly detailed study of the biology and anatomy of the mayfly Palingenia.

This paper presents descriptions of five new species of mayflies belonging to the subfamily Heptageniinae. Three of these species are from Illinois, one from Indiana, and one from Maine. They were segregated from material in the collection of the Natural History Survey; all the types are deposited in the Survey collection.

Mayflies are ubiquitous in freshwater environments. As a result, they are a common and important component in the flow of energy through ecosystems, both aquatic and terrestrial. Many predators include mayflies on their menu of organisms consumed including invertebrates, vertebrates and at least one plant. This paper examines the diversity of organisms

Morphological characteristics given below are based mainly on recent representatives, i. e. on Euplectop- tera only (see Chapter III); for many derived characters it is unclear if they are autapomorphies of Euplectoptera, or that of Euephemeroptera, or that of Panephemeroptera.
