Chicken mannose-binding lectin (MBL) gene variants with influence on MBL serum concentrations
Immunogenetics, 2013Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) plays a major role in the innate immune defence by activating the lectin complement pathway or by acting as an opsonin. Two forms of MBL have been characterised from several species, but for humans and chickens, only one form of functional MBL has been described.

BACKGROUND In vitro data support the use of combination of aztreonam (ATM) with ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI), but clinical studies are lacking. The aim of our study was to compare the outcome of patients with bloodstream infections (BSIs) due to MBLs ...

Posttranslational modifications in human plasma MBL and human recombinant MBL
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Proteins and Proteomics, 2007Mannan-binding lectin (MBL) is a complex serum protein that plays an important role in innate immunity. In addition to assuming several different oligomeric forms, the polypeptide itself is highly heterogeneous. This heterogeneity is due to post-translational modifications, which help to stabilize the intact protein in its active conformation.

MBL-deficiency is a commonly occurring deficiency of the innate immune system, affecting a substantial part of the population and has been extensively studied. MBL appears to function as a disease modifier. The role of MBL in different conditions is context-dependent.

Heterogeneity of MBL–MASP complexes
Molecular Immunology, 2006In order to study aspects of the stoichiometry and composition of human MBL-MASP complexes in the population, MBL-MASP complexes were bound from sera of 152 healthy individuals onto mannan-coated microtitre plates. Bound mannan-binding lectin (MBL) was measured by ELISA, and the enzyme activities of MBL-bound MASP-1 and MASP-2 were measured by an ...

MBL Awards are given for the best paper presented at the General Scientific Meetings by a senior investigator, a junior investigator, a graduate student, and an undergraduate; additional papers are selected for Honorable Mention. The five presentations selected for MBL Awards this year reflect the broad scope of science at the Laboratory.

Infusion of plasma-derived mannan-binding lectin (MBL) into MBL-deficient humans
Biochemical Society Transactions, 2003Our first experience of mannan-binding lectin (MBL)-replacement therapy was with a patient experiencing recurrent erythema multiforme associated with reactivation of herpes simplex virus; his erythematous eruptions could be controlled with infusions of fresh frozen plasma containing MBL, but not with plasma lacking MBL.

MASP interactions with plasma-derived MBL
Molecular Immunology, 2012The interaction of mannan-binding lectin (MBL) with its associated serine proteases (MASPs) was investigated using recombinant (r) MBL, plasma-derived (pd) MBL, rMASP-3 and rMAp19. When mixed with MBL-deficient serum, rMBL and pdMBL associated with free MASP-2 to (re)gain complement-activating activity.

In 1988, a year before Hurricane Hugo devastated many of the houses and downed the ancient hard wood trees in the area, we had purchased “Toti’s” cottage near the El Yunque Rain Forest on the northeast end of Puerto Rico (Fig. 5.1). Fortunately, Hugo’s damage to our cottage was limited to the low-pitched roof above the bedrooms in the rear of the house.
