Aircraft loads methodology for MDO

A methodology is presented for developing a complete set of aircraft loads to be used in the structural optimization of an aircraft wing during preliminary design. Using the software program ASTROS as the platform, a typical mid-size 100+ seat passenger aircraft was selected as the subject of the study.

This paper reviews recent progress made in MDO within the European aerospace industry through the activities of a sequence of international collaborative partnerships of increasing complexity. Firstly, a definition of MDO is provided and its function as a key tool in the context of concurrent engineering is discussed.

MDO — A Mathematical View Point

A quantitative analysis of coupling between systems of equations is introduced. This analysis is then applied to problems in multidisciplinary analysis, sensitivity, and optimization. For the sensitivity and optimization problems both multidisciplinary and single discipline feasibility schemes are considered.
