Living on the edge: Habitat characteristics of northern myotis at the periphery of its distribution

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Northern myotis selected tall trees with minimal decay, in patches with other roosting options. In our study area, these trees occurred in narrow bands within an agricultural matrix, differing from contiguous forest at the core of the species' distribution. Nevertheless, bats selected the tallest trees in the densest patches available.

THE MEANDERING OF ALLUVIAL RIVERS

open access: yesHydrology Research, 1973
To explain the formation of meanders, the author has synthesized relevant knowledge and utilized basic physical principles of flowing turbulent water and its interaction with the river bed. Starting from an initially straight and smooth channel, one can argue that the most probable site of the first erosional scar will be lateral from

Afforestation Partially Offsets Losses of Soil Conservation Services and Carbon Stock From Direct and Indirect Urban Expansion in China

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Urban expansion has exerted both direct and indirect impacts on natural land and ecosystem services it supports, driven by increasing population and food demand, yet these underlying pathways remain insufficiently distinguished. Here, we quantified the losses of soil conservation services (water erosion regulation and sandstorm prevention) and

Interplay among river meandering, discharge stochasticity and riparian vegetation

open access: yes, 2010
River sinuosity has an impact on riparian vegetation through different processes. The obvious one is the increment of the length of the riparian corridor due to meandering-induced river elongation.

A Study on the Distribution Characteristics of Salinity and Nutrients and the Migration Mechanism of Soil Salt in the Delingha Saline‐Alkali Soil Profile of the Qaidam Basin

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Soil salinization negatively impacts the economic development and ecological environment, particularly in the arid and semiarid regions of China. The Qaidam Basin constitutes a major distribution area of saline‐alkali land in the country. However, the distribution patterns of salinity and nutrients within soil profiles and the underlying salt ...

Ecological Challenges and Strategic Responses to China's Quantitative Rigidity of Cultivated Land Protection

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Balancing food security and ecological sustainability has become a critical challenge for land governance in rapidly urbanizing countries. China has successfully maintained national cultivated land quantity through a comprehensive farmland protection regime.

Future Soil Erosion Under Combined CMIP6 Climate Projections and Land Use/Land Cover Change: A RUSLE‐Based Assessment of the Kampe Omi Dam Basin in Nigeria

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Soil erosion remains a major environmental challenge in Nigeria, driven by the combined effects of climate variability and land use/land cover (LULC) changes. Understanding future dynamics is essential for effective soil conservation planning.

Post‐Fire Soil Organic Carbon Dynamics: Decline and Recovery Over Two Decades

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Wildfire can significantly alter soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics in forest ecosystems, with complex temporal patterns following fire events. However, research on post‐fire SOC recovery remains limited, particularly in dry‐warm valley regions that are prone to frequent forest fires.
