A review of the important stream morphologic theories and hypotheses published before 1971 indicates that none provides a satisfactory explanation to the formation of meandering streams. The law of least time rate of energy expenditure introduced by Yang1) is used to explain the formation of meandering streams. This law can explain why stable unbraided

A nonlinear model for river meandering
Water Resources Research, 2007We develop a nonlinear asymptotic theory of flow and bed topography in meandering channels able to describe finite amplitude perturbations of bottom topography and account for arbitrary, yet slow, variations of channel curvature. This approach then allows us to formulate a nonlinear bend instability theory, which predicts several characteristic ...

The ancestors of meandering rivers
Geology, 2016Modern alluvial plains, in contrast to their pre-Silurian counterparts, are characterized by the presence of meandering rivers in low-downstream-gradient areas, constituting efficient transport systems that maintain high bottom shear stresses in deep channels, which are made possible by bank stabilization, most commonly provided by vegetation in Earth ...

Meander Wavelength of Alluvial Rivers
Science, 1967Data on river channel and sediment characteristics were collected at 36 cross sections of stable alluvial river channels in Australia and western United States. These data demonstrate that the meander wavelength of a river is dependent not only on water discharge, but also on the type of sediment load moved through the channel.

Meanders are a feature of some of the world's noblest rivers, but laboratory models have failed to meander convincingly. A new experiment succeeds, promising us a refined understanding of this familiar but vexing phenomenon.

Meandering and braiding of rivers
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1978The origin of meandering and braiding of alluvial rivers is re-analysed in terms of stability theory. The flow is described by a two-dimensional model, and the transportation of sediment is separated into bed-load transport and transport of suspended sediment, by use of the improved knowledge of sediment transport mechanisms achieved in recent years ...

The meander curvature and other geometric features for rivers are analyzed using an energy approach together with relations for flow continuity, sediment load, resistance to flow, bank stability, and transverse circulation in channel bends. The analysis establishes the maximum curvature for which a river does the least work in turning.

THERE are many factors affecting the geometry of rivers. Width, depth, slope, flow velocity and plan shape are all influenced by discharge, sediment load, sediment types, and valley slope through the operation of the continuity, flow resistance, bed load, bank competence and meander equations.

On the origin of river meanders
Eos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 1951The present paper deals with the origin of river meanders. It is believed that the regular pattern characteristic of meandering, and especially the more or less constant nodal distance between bends of a given river stretch, are closely connected with transverse oscillations of the stream.
