Measurement errors in recall food consumption data [PDF]

open access: yes
Recall food consumption data, which is the basis of a great deal of empirical work, is believed to suffer from considerable measurement error. Diary records are believed to be very accurate.

Scalability of bidirectional vehicle strings with static and dynamic measurement errors

open access: yes, 2014
Poor scalability arises in many vehicle platoon problems. Bidirectional strings appear to show some promise for mitigating these problems. In some cases these solutions have the undesirable side effect of non-scalable response to measurement errors.

Survey of the Fixed-Geometry Wheeler Cap Method: The Myth of a Simple Antenna Efficiency Measurement Technique

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of Antennas and Propagation
Rigorous experimental estimation of antenna efficiency is challenging and so the simplicity of the fixed-geometry Wheeler cap method has made it an attractive low-cost option.

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Electron transfer between complexes III and IV in S. cerevisiae mitochondrial membranes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in S. cerevisiae mitoplasts is limited by complex IV catalytic capacity, rather than two‐dimensional cytochrome c diffusion. At physiological cytochrome c : supercomplex ratios at salinity equivalent to that of 20 mm monovalent salt, activity is maximized, indicating that this low ionic strength accurately mimics

Consistent estimation in an implicit quadratic measurement error model

open access: yes, 2004
An adjusted least squares estimator is derived that yields a consistent estimate of the parameters of an implicit quadratic measurement error model. In addition, a consistent estimator for the measurement error noise variance is proposed.

Multiple robust estimation in high-dimensional data with outliers and measurement errors in covariates

open access: yes上海师范大学学报. 自然科学版
This article is based on the original empirical likelihood function, introducing Huber function and weight function into the estimation equation of the constraint conditions, combining the empirical likelihood method with the robust estimation equation ...

Obesity and Health-Care Costs in Switzerland: Dealing with Endogeneity in Non-Linear Regression Models

open access: yesSwiss Journal of Economics and Statistics, 2016
Summary We draw microdata from the Swiss Household Panel to estimate the causal effect of obesity on the number of physician visits, the amount of hospital days, and the respective costs incurred.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an
