The measure of a measurement [PDF]
We identify a fractal scale s in a family of Borel probability measures μ on the unit interval which arises independently in quantum information theory and in wavelet analysis. The scales s we find satisfy s∊R+ and s≠1, some s<1 and some s>1.

Here, we experimentally demonstrate a wedged fiber optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor enabling high-sensitivity temperature detection. The sensing probe has a geometry with two asymmetrical bevels, with one inclined surface coated with an ...

Measuring unrecorded measurement [PDF]
Projective (Von Neumann) Measurement of an operator (i.e. a dynamical variable) selected from a prescribed set of operators is termed unrecorded measurement (URM) when both the selected operator and the measurement outcome are unknown, i.e. "lost". Within classical physics a URM is completely inconsequential: the state is unaffected by measurement ...

CdS/SiI2: A promising two-dimensional materials for photocatalytic water splitting
Hydrogen production using photocatalyst for water splitting is considered to be one of the most promising methods to solve the energy challenge. The feasibility of CdS/SiI2 heterostructure as a photocatalyst is systematically investigated in geometrical,

Bioactive Trace Metal Distributions and Biogeochemical Controls in the Southern Ocean [PDF]
Extensive sampling in many regions of the Southern Ocean has demonstrated that surface water concentrations of dissolved Fe are low enough to limit phytoplankton growth. In contrast, there is currently no evidence that other bioactive elements (e.g., Mn,

The Difficulty of Measuring the Measurable [PDF]
When we were students of medicine at Zurich University, we were obliged to do a 1-month internship called Hafelipraktikum. For many of us, this job constituted the very first opportunity to become familiar with our future profession, namely with real patients in a hospital.

Underwater Image Restoration via DCP and Yin–Yang Pair Optimization
Underwater image restoration is a challenging problem because light is attenuated by absorption and scattering in water, which can degrade the underwater image.
