Entropies as measures of software information
Proceedings IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance. ICSM 2001, 2002This paper investigates the use of entropies as measures of software information content. Several entropies, including the well-known Shannon entropy, are characterized by their mathematical properties. Based on these characterizations, the entropies, which are suitable for measuring software systems, are rigorously chosen.

Relative Entropy as a Measure of Diagnostic Information
Medical Decision Making, 1999Relative entropy is a concept within information theory that provides a measure of the distance between two probability distributions. The author proposes that the amount of information gained by performing a diagnostic test can be quantified by calculating the relative entropy between the posttest and pretest probability distributions. This statistic,

Entropy description of measured information in microwave imaging
2008 International Conference on Microwave and Millimeter Wave Technology, 2008For the reconstruction of permittivity distribution in microwave imaging, the information quantity of measured data plays an important role for the reconstruction precision. And the information quantity depends greatly on the number of measurement points.

Identification of entropy as an information measure
2005Abstract In this chapter, we will use coding theory to prove that the entropy does indeed represent the information content of a set of messages generated according to a set of prescribed probabilities. We will first do this by showing that the average number of bits used per message is equal to the entropy H , if we use the optimal code

Cumulative Residual Entropy: A New Measure of Information
IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2004In this paper, we use the cumulative distribution of a random variable to define its information content and thereby develop an alternative measure of uncertainty that extends Shannon entropy to random variables with continuous distributions. We call this measure cumulative residual entropy (CRE).

Information and Entropy Measures of Rendered Literal Translation
2021The definition and effect of translation literality (word-for-word translation, as opposed to sense-for-sense translation) have been a topic in translation studies for very many years. Schaeffer and Carl (2014) introduced measures to quantify the literality of observed translations based on their distance to a hypothetical absolutely literal ...

Measuring Informativeness of Data by Entropy and Variance
1999Measuring informativeness of data or news is particularly important as it quantifies the amount of “learning”. This is central to scientific progress as well as to assessing the direction and value of “information” and technologies. As is the case with all “indices”, the desirability of any measure of information depends on at least two considerations:

Information entropy as a measure of DEM quality
Computers & Geosciences, 2012The Shannon-Weaver Information statistic has been proposed as a useful measure of the quality of a Digital Elevation Model. However the statistic, usually referred to as entropy, is based purely on the range of values in a dataset and their relative proportion and is not directly related to the accuracy of those values or their spatial arrangement ...

The relationship of entropy‐related measures to money information
Systems Research and Behavioral Science, 2008AbstractThe specific purpose of this paper is to trace the development of entropy‐related thought from its thermodynamic origins through its organizational and economic applications to its relationship to money information. That trace reveals that existing entropy measures are of states or changes in states that are caused by energy processes.
