The Attention Economy: Measuring the Value of Free Goods on the Internet

Information Systems Research
We develop a framework to measure the value of free goods and services available on the internet. The conventional method of measuring consumer surplus based on monetary expenditures is ineffective because these goods’ prices are predominantly zero.

Measuring the Market Value of Non-Market Goods: The Case of Conspicuous Consumption

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2012
Although non-market goods are not directly allocated through markets, some of these goods are allocated through markets in an indirect fashion. Such is the case with conspicuous consumption: people buy market goods (e.g., clothing) to signal their wealth and then increase the probability of obtaining some non-market goods (e.g., admiration). We are the

When it's good to signal badness: using objective measures of discriminability to test the value of being distinctive

Animal Behaviour, 2017
The hypothesis that prey organisms can reduce the risk of predation by overtly signalling their unprofitability, or aposematism, has a long history in behavioural and evolutionary biology. To fully understand this longstanding idea, we need to measure and manipulate traits of aposematic prey, such as their distinctiveness from other prey, from the ...

Sufficient Statistics for Measuring the Value of Changes in Local Public Goods: Does Chetty’s Framework Inform Lind?

2009
The performance of quasi-experimental methods applied to changes in non-market goods depends on the ability of reduced form models to accurately measure willingness to pay. When exogenous changes are non-marginal, the accuracy of the reduced form approximations is not well understood.

Measuring the value of cultural goods in international trade

2010
The thesis includes the study on the problem of cultural goods valuation. It considers their classification and methods of modeling. The research broadly examines factors and components constituting the value of cultural goods. It also reviews methods used for estimating the value and proposes an improved approach based on willingness-to-pay/accept and

Valuing the Main Forest Ecosystem Services for China's Beibu Gulf Economic Zone: How to Make a Good Measurement of Biodiversity Maintenance?

2011 Asia-Pacific Power and Energy Engineering Conference, 2011
Since 1997, Costanza and others assessed the value of global ecosystem services. The assessment methodology and the adaptability of the established methods have become the concern of academia. The paper assesses the four forest ecosystem services of Beibu Gulf in China, based on the services valuation methods, accepted by civil experts.

MEASURING NON‐USE VALUE OF ENVIRONMENTAL GOODS USING THE CONTINGENT VALUATION METHOD: PROBLEMS OF INFORMATION AND COGNITION AND THE APPLICATION OF COGNITIVE QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN METHODS

Journal of Agricultural Economics, 1995
Much interest now focuses on the use of the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) to assess non‐use value of environmental goods. The paper reviews recent literature and highlights particular problems of information provision and respondent knowledge, comprehension and cognition. These must be dealt with by economists in designing CVM surveys for eliciting

Kuiper's P-value as a measuring tool and decision procedure for the goodness-of-fit test

Journal of Applied Statistics, 1988
The need for computing P-values for the Kuiper statistic has been emphasised by Batschelet (1981). Some exact P-values, with useful interpretations for making inference about a probability model for circular data, are provided. Computation of the exact values are based on Durbin (1973) boundary crossing probabilities.

Measuring the Value of a Public Good: An Empirical Comparison of Elicitation Procedures.

American Economic Review, 1987
The problems associated with accurately measuring the value of a public good in an applied setting are considered. The values obtained from hypothetical elicitation procedures are compared and contrasted with those obtained in a marketplace. When hypothetical measurements are elicited in the field, buying-selling discrepancies similar to those ...
